Blog Week: Meet Pastor Steve Rogers

Rogers is the first of five Greenfield Patch bloggers to be featured this week.

Editor's Note: Welcome to Blog Week, where each weekday we introduce you to one of Greenfield Patch's finest Local Voices bloggers.

Back in April, when I and Greenfield Patch were still getting our bearings, I set out on the Patch Spring Tour, where I met tons of great people, spread the word about Patch and even enjoyed the grand opening of one of the city’s most popular restaurants.

Hours into the tour, literally, Pastor Steve Rogers of Elim Tabernacle stopped by to chat with me at Starbucks. In fact, Steve was the only person to chat with me at Starbucks that day, other than perhaps Mayor Neitzke.

It quickly became clear that I had found a Patch believer.

Rogers has lived in or around Greenfield for more than 30 years, and his church, Elim, where he has been a pastor for six years, is located just down the road from Greenfield High School. He and his wife Cindy have two children, and the avid reader has been the Greenfield Police Department chaplain for four years and the fire department’s for two.

With strong ties like that to a city he loves, Rogers was one of the first people I asked to blog for Greenfield Patch.

“When I was asked to blog for the Patch, I felt it was not only a great opportunity for me as a pastor/chaplain and overall fan of the city I pastor and live in to promote it and the values that I stand and live for,” Rogers said, “but I was hoping to have a positive role in supporting a young man whom I immediately admired and believed in.”

(Editor’s note: I didn’t pay Rogers to say that about me. At least, not much).

Rogers’s blog posts have been inspirational, funny and eye-opening. One of my favorites was when he expressed his struggles, as a man of faith, watching others celebrate the death of Osama bin Laden.

“I have enjoyed the response of the people that have been so gracious as to let me know that they have read what I have written,” Rogers said. “It has really been good for me, knowing that I am addressing a wide range of readers and people that I otherwise may not have a chance to address.”
