Whitnall’s Kameron Bourgeois is two wins away from being crowned at state champion.

Bourgeois, a 103-pound senior, won two matches Thursday to improve to 46-1 and, more importantly, advance to the state semifinals of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.

In a quarterfinal match, Bourgeois led, 2-1, after one period before registering a pin in 3 minutes, 46 seconds of Holmen freshman Darius Wright (37-7).

“It was a great match against a very quality opponent,” Whitnall co-head coach John Quinlan said via the “whitwrestle” Twitter feed. “On to the semis and hopefully we can do it again.”

Bourgeois (46-1) will face Arrowhead sophomore Andrew Crone (41-5) in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” Quinlan said. “Crone is ranked number three and deservedly so. Technically very sound and a good leg rider.

“We will have our hands full, but if KB wrestles well he can go with anyone right now.”

In the first round, Bourgeois took a 2-0 lead in the first period and made that score stand in a win over Manitowoc Lincoln freshman Zac Youngchild (41-3).

“KB was in control the whole match,” Whitnall co-head coach Craig Austin said, also via the “whitwrestle” feed. “He looked real nervous but got over the jitters.”

Greenfield seniors Andrew Krueger and Taylor Wirtz enjoyed mixed results at the tournament.

Krueger (36-6), the Hustlin’ Hawks 140-pounder, edged Green Bay Preble senior Marshall Pennings, 3-2, before getting pinned by undefeated Arrowhead senior Jake Sueflohn (47-0) in 1:31.

Krueger will wrestle at 10 a.m. Friday in a wrestleback.

Wirtz (32-9) lost his first match, 13-11, to Milton junior Garrett Whitehead at 130 and will have a wrestleback match at 10 a.m. Friday.
