The curtain has not drawn on the popular Budget Cinema on Highway 100.
At least not yet.
At Tuesday's Planning Commission meeting, Greenfield's only movie theater is expected to receive a favorable recommendation to extend its current lease with Greenfield Highlands through July 1, 2014, years after it was expected to be razed for redevelopment.
The city's Common Council would have to give final approval of the lease extension at a meeting June 19.
The razing could happen before the July 2014 lease expires if the theater or developer gives 120 days notice and terminates the lease.
The Greenfield Highlands project, part of a 47-acre tax incremental financing district along Highway 100, was originally approved in 2006 and was slated to include retail locations, single-family homes and condominiums, according to Greenfield NOW.
The theater was to make way for new development — and eventually it likely will — but as the economy slowed, Budget Cinemas, a second-run theater, has remained open. Last year, the Greenfield Highlands Health Center, operated by Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin opened just north of the cinema.

Keep it open, the middle class is under extreme financial pressure and can't afford to go to regular theaters. The elitist consulting firm that worked for the Smart Land Use Steering Committee five years ago advocated ripping down Budget and other businesses and homes of the common person. The eminent domain screw up of 2010 was product of misleading advise. As a member of the steering committee I asked how are we to obtain this real estate. The answer was to negotiate, but that was not always the case. Let's keep our eyes and ears open on any and all zoning proposals so we can maintain a balanced commercial and residential environment. By the way, on the eminent domain screw up, it was the only time since the county pension scandal, that I agreed with the positions of the CRG, Citizens for Reactionary Government.
