Construction Begins on Greenfield's New Walmart
The project moved forward with little fanfare, unlike in other communities.
Construction began on a new Walmart in Greenfield earlier this month, without hoopla or protests from concerned citizens that have saddled Walmart plans in other communities.
Just last week, the South Milwaukee Common Council moved ahead with a plan to sell city-owned land for a 115,000-square-foot Walmart near the corner of North Chicago Avenue and College Avenue, just across the boarder from Cudahy.
Residents there are concerned about traffic congestion and crime, according to a story by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
In June, after eight months of discussion, Greendale finally approved the construction of Walmart on South 76th Street, across from Southridge Mall where the U.S. Bowling Congress building stands. Some local store owners expressed concern of competition with Walmart.
Here in Greenfield, the new 140,000-square-foot store will occupy the land formerly known as Green Fields Golf Center, a mini-golf course and driving range that was sold to Walmart for $7.4 million. It is being built on the land adjacent to an existing Walmart, with perhaps that being the reason few or no citizens who were already accustomed to having a Walmart nearby voiced concerns about the project.
As for the current Walmart building, it is expected to be leased out by Walmart, likely to another retail business.

I am actually sad to be losing more recreation for low cost shopping. Add a second floor. Remember Shusters. I designed the mini-golf course back in 1990. Losing these "things to do for fun" places is a big shame.

A two-storied Walmart would be pretty interesting. I agree about the losing "things to do for fun" places and I was particularly fond of the driving range because it was close to my house.

David / anyone,
I must have missed the common council meeting where this was approved, but is there somewhere we can see the layout of where the new store will sit on the land, where the parking lot will sit, exits to the road, etc? Being that where they are working now is so low compared to where the Walgreen’s sits, it would be interesting to see how this will look when done.

Hey Bill, I believe the Walmart was approved last September, a few months before Greenfield Patch launched. A story at the following link suggests the land will be elevated, but I'm not sure how that would work. I'll try to get a copy of the plan and post it in a future construction update.
