Eat Local: Pho Viet
A new restaurant introduces Vietnamese cuisine to Greenfield.
Located next to the new Asian supermarket on 27th Street and Grange Avenue, Pho Viet provides the neighborhood with new flavors and authentic recipes. The 3-month-old restaurant has quickly built a solid following within the Greenfield community.
“At first I assumed we’d cater mostly to the Vietnamese and Laos communities here in Milwaukee,” owner Ngan H. Vo said. “But the majority of our clientele is exclusively born and raised Milwaukeeans looking for something different to try.”
The menu features several courses including appetizers, noodle and rice dishes. Most entrees come with a choice of meat as well as the option to integrate a level of spiciness.
“Our most popular dish is the Bun Bo Hue,” Vo said. “This beef broth is infused with rice noodles, cabbage and several types of beef. It has a combination of sweet, spicy, salty and savory flavors all infused together. It’s not like anything you’ll find in American cuisine, but those that order it, keep coming back for more.”
For the less adventurous types, the menu also includes classic Asian favorites like spring rolls, which are like those typically found in most Asian restaurants, but at Pho Viet are packed with more vegetables. All of the items available on the menu are under $10 and the portions served for the entrees are large enough for two to eat their fill.
On a typical day, the lunch rush is filled with people from the surrounding business parks seeking a quick and satisfying meal. During the evenings, families and broader demographic will leisurely enjoy the kind service, clean dining room and televisions.
Employee Bao Vo has worked at the restaurant since it opened and said, "The recipes used are traditional Vietnamese and are a lot like the ones my mom used to make for us growing up. For those ready to explore the ranges of their palate, our restaurant provides a spontaneous and adventurous experience.”
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Pho Viet also offers guests the option to order at the counter or call ahead to carry out meals. Reservations are accepted for large parties.
