A failed two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter helped Whitnall seal a share of its first Woodland Conference title since 2000 on Friday.

The Falcons rebounded from a 34-13 loss the previous week to Brown Deer to beat Cudahy, 22-22, at Falcon Field in the annual homecoming game.

The win was huge for several reasons. First, is guaranteed the Falcons will be playing in the WIAA postseason after wrapping up the regular season at New Berlin West on Oct. 12. Whitnall improved to 5-2 in league games, assuring themselves a spot in the playoff field.

In addition, the victory moved Whitnall to 4-1 in Woodland East games, tying them with Brown Deer atop the final division standings.

In the win over Cudahy, Whitnall quarterback Zach Sutton hooked up with Sam Mentkowski for a 59-yard touchdown with 6 minutes, 42 seconds remaining. The extra-point kick gave the Falcons a 22-14 lead.

But the hapless Packers did not go away quietly. Cudahy scored a rushing touchdown with just 7 seconds left, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful and the Falcons escaped with a two-point victory.

Mentkowski scored the Falcons other two touchdowns as well, collecting a 27-yard pass from Sutton in the second quarter and scoring on a 90-yard kickoff return with under a minute remaining in the first half.

Hawks' playoff hopes ended

Meanwhile, the Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks’ postseason dreams came to an abrupt halt with a 33-0 loss to visiting Brown Deer on homecoming night.

With the loss, Greenfield dropped to 2-5 overall. The Hawks finish the regular season at Wauwatosa West on Oct. 12.
