41-year-old man attempts to escape stuck elevator in a Milwaukee apartment building.

A 41-year-old Greenfield man died Monday night after falling down an elevator shaft in a Milwaukee apartment building.

James Greiner fell 118 feet after he attempted to free himself from a stuck elevator at the Edgewater Apartments, 1707 N. Prospect Ave., at about 11 p.m.

According to the report from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner, Greiner and a friend went to the apartment building to visit a girlfriend, who was not home.

"The pair went to the roof to enjoy the view and on their way down, the elevator stopped between the 13th and 12th floors," the medical examiner said in its report.

Greiner pried open the elevator door and jumped onto the 12th floor, but his momentum propelled him backwards and he fell down the shaft, according to the medical examiner.
