Greenfield School Board Decides to Wait, Again
Board members put off a decision to replace former Superintendent Conrad Farner on an interim basis until Feb. 11, nearly a full month after Farner's last day.
Greenfield School Board member Russ Spahn was only kidding, but he might as well have been serious when he told Assistant to the Superintendent Erica Wendelberger to “just book the room for every Monday night.”
Spahn made the joke Monday after board members unanimously decided to table an important decision regarding the filling of the superintendent vacancy for yet another week.
On the agenda for the second straight week was a discussion and possible decision to “approve compensation for performance of additional duties related to the Superintendent and Director of Business Services roles.”
Options include hiring an interim superintendent or allowing the duties of the superintendent to be fulfilled from an administrator within the district.
Board members debated the same thing Jan. 28, but came to no conclusion. Deliberations Monday produced an identical result.
Board members will hold a special meeting again Monday, Feb. 11, to discuss its next move again. It will be the board’s sixth straight special meeting in as many weeks, all centered on the leaving of Superintendent Conrad Farner, whose last day was Jan. 15, and how to replace him.
The decision not to move forward Monday came after nearly 3 hours of board business in closed session, half of which was spent interviewing representatives from search firms to help the board hire a new superintendent.
Some, if not all, of the other half, presumably, was spent debating what to do in the immediate future.
The board did make one decision regarding the key vacancy Monday, and that was to choose the Wisconsin Association of School Boards to help assist in finding a new superintendent.
Assuming the contract is OKed by the district’s legal team, WASB will receive no more than $12,500 and will start its search Feb. 11. The goal of WASB will be to fill the role permanently by the end of April.
“WASB had an excellent presentation, they had good ideas and I think they’ll be a good fit for us,” Board president Bruce Bailey said. “They’ll talk to the public and other stakeholders and will get us the best superintendent they can for the job.”

Or a very low cost way to find the best Sup. candidates. Other districts spend $35,000 (or more) and then pay a % of the negotiated salary to the search firm. WASB is a very LOW cost way of doing the same thing.

Just get going, I have been reading that many districts are looking for Supt's. Grafton, Cedarburg, Oconomowoc, Nicolet, Madison, Racine, to name some. The district is taking time and possibly going to loose good candidates. So not look inside for permanent supt. We can do better.

Our district is rotting day by day. We need leadership. Don't hire a local supt search firm that will attract only local people becasue they cahrge less. So you save $10,000 and come up with 10 loser candiates. Greendale did a search last year. They got a good one with a national search. Greenfield has a bad reputation now. They need to go nationally. pay the next one more and expect more.

Gee Fred, from what I have read "some people" are not all that thrilled with their new Supt. in Greendale. So there. And I don't think Greenfield has a bad reputation, in what way? You are assuming if you don't spend more you will come up with losers? How silly. Whoever is chosen, will no doubt be the wrong person for some of you anyway. Let the system at least try to work. We are not rotting day by day. You must come from the doom and gloom society.

Greendale is dissatisfied with the results. The board election has three challengers against three incumbents in a place that has been quiet for year. Greendale got a candidate resigned his last position after less than one year.
We can do better.

you want leadership?start at the top and vote Don Pridemore! lets overhaul the WDPI and change the policies that hold us back from a quality education for our KIDS. MORE MONEY for a SUP doesnt do that .Let our neibors spend more money ,we dont have to.we have teachers, parents, boardmembers, and we cant forge an environment of quality education without a single person called the ADMINISTRATOR? COME ON

Chris, so are you saying that all companies could survive without CEO's VP's etc? You need someone to oversee millions of dollars, hundreds of employees and thousands of KIDS. BTW Don Pridemore will ruin education in WI if he wins. He has no clue about any effective policies.

Don Pridmore is an unqualified Teapartyer who follow the ALEC/Koch Brothers agenda and turn our public schools over to the churches and to corporations

take a look at all the people with all the degrees who now run the WDPI! Why is our educational system doing so poorly with all these bright people at the helm? They are the PROBLEM!Lets get it done .Make a couple of changes and lets do better !or do u suggest we use the same policies that we have now? Tony Evers wont make the changes .Get rid of him. He has had his turn.

There is nothing wrong with the entire education system in WI. Yes there are problems in large, urban settings which has more to do with societal issues. Turning over $6,000 plus per student to schools with no system to see if they are improving is ridiculous. See the recent Journal/Sentinel article where the leader of a choice school said the only way they track student growth is with a grade book on the desk...and that they threw away attendance records. That is not the answer.
