Matt Romney: Debate Moderators 'Doing the Best Job They Can'

Mitt Romney's son was in Waukesha to thank supporters as the Nov. 6 presidential election draws closer.

When Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama squared off in their second debate Tuesday night, Matt Romney was in the audience to support his dad with the rest of his brothers.

“We were excited,” said Matt Romney. “Obviously President Obama came out with a little more aggressiveness than he did in the last debate, but I feel like my dad really mastered it very well. I think what he did more importantly is he laid out his record.”

While some conservatives have been blasting moderator Candy Crowley for being too pro-Obama, Matt Romeny shied away from criticizing her.

“When we look at the moderators, we really feel like they are doing the best job they can,” Matt Romney said. “I just look at President Obama and my dad. I feel like the debates are a great chance for them to speak their minds without too much of a filter. So far, I think the debates have proven that they can do that.”

Crowley told the Associated Press she was only “trying to bring some sort of clarity to the situation” when she interrupted Romney’s comments about how Obama handled the Libyan attacks.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign declared Obama the winner while attacking Romney’s performance during the debate.

“Romney misfired on his attacks and fired blanks on his own proposals,” said Campaign Manager Jim Messina. “When he was exposed on the emptiness of his own plans, he was rattled, lashed out against moderator and refused to explain his indefensible ideas.”

Debates Are 'Great Forum' for Romney's Campaign

The debates are just one way the Romney campaign are trying to let the public see who Romney is and what he’s about. As the race tightens between Romney and Obama, Matt Romney said America’s getting to see Romney the way he sees the former Massachusetts governor – as a dad, a father and a husband.

“I don’t think many people had a chance to get to know my dad in a personal way. They are still doing that,” Matt Romney said. “I think the debates are a great forum for that, and I think that is why you are seeing the polls tighten.

“That is why we are seeing a lot of people on the ground saying ‘the more I see your dad, the more I like him.’ They haven’t had a chance to see him yet.

“That is what a campaign is about, that is what the debates are about. This is just a great opportunity for us just to allow him to present his vision of smaller government, reduced taxes for the middle class, less regulation, allowing small businesses to flourish and to turn the economy around. “

Coming Back to Wisconsin

While Matt Romney was visiting the Republican Party of Waukesha County’s headquarters to thank volunteers for working on their dad’s campaign, his other brothers will be making visits to the home state of Romney’s vice presidential pick, Congressman Paul Ryan, R-Janesville.

And while nothing’s officially announced, Romney could return to Wisconsin. He was in Waukesha in August for Ryan’s homecoming event days after Romney announced Ryan as his vice presidential pick.

 “I would guess he would (come to Wisconsin),” Matt Romney said. “This state is very close for us, we really feel like we can win this state. Between him and Congressman Ryan, I am sure they will be spending some time here.”

Keith, Bren and Steve,

You can stop spewing false pro-Romney propaganda. The SOCIALIST nonsense was disproven by Politifact in early 2012. Please do your research before posting more Romney fiction. It makes all Republicans look terribly ignorant!

@Beth Norquist -

Rachel Maddow of MSNBC stated that Politifact is not a reliable so-called 'fact-checking' organization.

Personally, Hoffa doesn't trust any of the so-called 'fact-checkers,' as how do you know that they aren't biased, and who fact-checks the so-called 'fact-checkers?' There are many self-declared 'fact-checkers' out there, and rarely do the so-called 'fact-checkers' fully agree with one another. Isn't that proof enough that these so-called 'fact-checkers' aren't worth a second of your time - that is of course if you value accurate information?

Try researching the primary sources for yourself, making your own analysis, and coming to your own conclusions - that what us big boys call 'thinking.'

Instead of entrusting the task of thinking to third party secondary sources, as doing so only makes you a lazy sheep/lemming!

What 'primary sources', Hoffa? Other than being right in the room when something happens or being given access to records, it's impossible. Even the primary sources will have a bias in some cases.

@Randy1949 -

Obviously, the issue of whether or not someone or their policies represent socialism is a highly subjective assessment, thus, how could an agency claiming to be 'fact' based make an objective analysis of such an allegation?

Let's think a little, instead of constantly allowing others to do it for us!

And always defer to primary sources when available, otherwise at least be wise enough to question the accuracy and validity of the secondary sources - is that too much to ask?

The entire Romney family is a class act all the way!

Unlike the Obama's - Michelle violated the agreement she made at the debate last night to remain silent when she applauded at Crowley's grossly erroneous 'fact-check.'

Michelle Obama is no different than her husband - nothing but a big LIAR! One can't help but to feel somewhat sorry for Barack's and Michelle's daughters.

@JRH...I am becoming disappointed with your escalation of negative partisan rhetoric. You are beginning to sound like some of the more unsavory commentators. Please remember, we'll still be here after the election, no matter who wins.

If Michelle didn't break her promise to remain silent, then there wouldn't be an issue.

Don't you think that our leaders should lead by example? And when our first lady is caught in a LIE, don't you think it's important to expose, especially during an election year where the incumbent is seeking a second term?

By contrast, the Romney's all adhered to their agreement to remain silent during the debate.

Living up to the agreements one makes in life is a part of leading by example, wouldn't you say?

@JRH...Sometimes there are things just not worth commenting on. The bigger picture is much more important and this nonsense of nit picking everything is unproductive. I would suggest you step away for a little while and see if you don't retrieve your objectivity. Are you an independent or not?

Lyle, for a guy that never hesitates calling out a conservative for being unsportsmanlike, the rest of us are giggling ourselves silly over your defending the first lady for being flagged for taunting at the debate. 15 yards and a pox on your house for being demonstrably tin eared for not being more observant (and circumspect)

@Lyle -

How come there was never ever lecture from you towards Bren or morninmist for their nitpicking over Romney's car elevator, the incident with Romney's family dog, the college hair cutting thing, etc?

They both certainly mentioned all of those and other trivial events on a regular enough basis to have caught your attention, and certainly, if what Hoffa said here warranted a lecture, then the lecture on Bren's and morninmist's comments from you is long overdue!

Hoffa is very independent - but one of his pet-peeves is when leaders don't lead by example, and Obama has been notorious over the course of his term for saying one thing and doing the exact opposite himself, as if the rules don't apply to him and his family for some reason or another.

And Hoffa's been very independent wherein he has constantly pointed out his admiration of Jimmy Carter for being a man who was very good at and commendable for walking his talk! Carter earned respect by being a man of character.

If Barack and Michelle had any class at all, they'd apologize to the nation for Michelle's breach of the agreement that she made when she walked into the hall that night. For all we know, other people in the room may have taken their cue to start applauding from her.

Like Hoffa said - lead by example or go home!
