UPDATE: Family's Two Dogs Killed in House Fire on 38th Street

Cause and extent of damages unknown in midday blaze.

No injuries were reported Friday in midday a fire at a home at 3859 S. 38th St. that claimed the lives of two pets.

According to the homeowners, who were not home at the time, the family's two Shih Tzu dogs perished in the blaze that began a little before 11:42 a.m.

The Greenfield Fire Department along with the departments from Greenfield, Greendale, Hales Corners, Franklin and New Berlin brought the fire under control in about an hour.

"I didn't see anything. There was no smoke, nothing," said a neighbor, who wished not to be identified.

The neighbor, who smelled smoke when she let her dog out, saw the homeowner pull up to her house.

"She opened the door and then there was all of this smoke," she said. "She couldn't get in. I don't know how long she was gone. I don't know how long it was smoking."

Traffic in the area was being diverted as firefighters continued to look for possible hot spots.

There is no word yet on the cause of the blaze or the extent of damage.
