Preview: Monday's School Board Meeting Jam-Packed

A number of hot-button topics are on Monday's agenda.

Monday’s Greenfield School Board meeting, the first since Conrad Farner resigned as superintendent, is sure to be an eventful one.

The two biggest items expected to be discussed are the filling of Farner’s vacant position, as well as determining the hiring process for a new director of business following the resignation of Kristin Kollath.

The board is also expected to take up school start times and school schedules, more than 20 months after the school board voted down a measure to make any time changes.

And in closed session, the board will discuss the class action lawsuit filed against the district by more than 200 teachers earlier this month.

I hope the board will will make some good decisions on the Hiring of a couple new administrators as well as deciding what to do about Todd Bugnacki. I also think the school start time issue ( with a $200,000 price tag ) should be put on hold, and discuss what we can do to make our schools safer. The money would be used more wisely to protect our Kids. Sadly, I don't see SCHOOL SAFETY on the agenda.

Right now they need to work on the priorities and not worry about school start times. The classes/class schedules need to be set for the 2013-2014 school year. Incoming Freshman and current HS students need to select classes the beginning of February. The other must deal with issue is the recruiting of the new super and business mgr. The new supr and bus. mgr should have input into the school start times.

30 Supt. vacancies in WI now. This includes Racine, Madison, Grafton, Cedarburg, Nicolet, to name a few. Move fast Board, please!!!! Bugnacki is not right in the timing. Offer at least 150 K Plus. We need a good one. Make sure the person you hire for permanent position has been a teacher, principal, and superintendent. They are out there. Don't delay though. Hire an interim to come in 3 days a week and help with Supt, selection.

I know that the people who are in my 'camp' are not posting on this forum, but I just want to throw out there that I feel pretty strongly that the board should put the Assistant Supt into the Supt role. I know that some are adamant that that person should NOT be put there, but it seems like the reasonable thing to do. Mr. Bugnacki knows the district, knows the educational mandates that are right around the corner for WI, and could seamlessly step into the position. I'm reading a few strong opinions, but think about it; if the guy has made questionable decisions in the past, were they truly his? His boss was known as being a bit of tyrant, so I doubt that he had much latitude in decision making, or even input. (I am friends with one of the outgoing administrators - not supt - and was told that Bugnacki did not agree with much of what came to him from above, especially after a couple of years of dealing with it. Why not give him a chance to show where he stands? Maybe even a limited term contract or something, so that the board can decide to go a different direction AFTER giving him a chance. A search will take time and money, and the new person will have Mr. Bugnacki bring him or her up to speed on everything anyway. Seems like it could save some time to let Mr. Bugnacki take over, show us what he's made of WITHOUT someone else, and THEN decide whether he's right for us. I know a few who have personal grudges will disagree, but I say give him a shot on a short leash.

That seems like a good idea. I was talking to a friend of mine who is an aide in GF, and she says the same thing: there have a been a lot of decisions made either with kids in mind (at the expense of the adults, which created a lot of ill feelings), or with money issues in mind, with same result. She said the same thing as Matt...maybe much of the decision making wasn't even the Asst Supt?

The guy has had MULTIPLE inappropriate relationships. He is not a good candidate.

I really dont think this should be a trlal and error thing. - "if the guy has made questionable decisions in the past, were they truly his? His boss was known as being a bit of tyrant, so I doubt that he had much latitude in decision making, or even input." Well, if he didn't have the leadership to step up and make his feelings known to the School Board, that is not leadership. Because of all the, he said, she said comments, starting with someone new is the only way to go. A trial period is just absurd, this isn't some apprenticeship !!! On another subject, the board is also going to address the school start time issues. It could have a hefty price tag. I haven't seen anybody really address school safety. With all the publicity of recent school shootings, this should be addressed before spending any funds on school start times. There are things that can be done to make our schools, teachers and KIDS safer. This will also come with a hefty price tag, but better to spend funds on keeping kids SAFE first.

I'm with (the other) 'Ann'. :) Priorities must be set and held to. I'm not sure how the board thinks they're going to get through everything at this time! I too - at the risk of getting hammered by some of the negativity that lurks around these postings! - think that promoting the asst. sup is the way to go. I like the idea of a shorter than usual contract....a 'trial' period maybe?

A dysfunctional organization should not promote from within to a hihger position. Farner was an Assistant Supt/Human Resources for four years and was promoted from within without doing a search. look where it got us. I have never had a conversation with Farner. I do not know firsthand how destructive he was. I am going but what is being said. Bugnacki, sorry the timing is not right for you. You should leave why you can and let's start fresh.

I don't know about putting Bugnacki in even on a temporary basis - he seemed like an ok principle at the middle school but you could always tell he wanted more authority. He was part of the good ole boys club when he moved to Admin - which wasn't good for us at all - look where we are now. Or do they put him in with no promises about being promoted and see what happens - do the search and interview him along with others? The one thing I can say - is he did show up for the HS graduation ceremonies - but I think it was because he had to since Conrad always had an excuse for not being there.

I'm not into all the hearsay and gossip of 'past transgressions'...not my business as long as the leader is putting me in a position to do great things with and for my students. There could be a million things out there...they might all be true, they might not. We will never know what Mr. Bugnacki can do as a leader unless he's given a chance to show us. Point taken Fred...it may be wrong timing. But, like a couple of posts above, I have enough respect that I would at least like to find out what he could do w/o the Farner influence hanging around.

Not that interesting. A few seem to have personal axes to grind, and I think that should not be a part of this decision. It sounds as though the Asst Supt has all the experience, the correct license (I assume?), and knowledge of issues facing GF that it would be silly to not at least give him a contract just because some people don't like him. The board can work closely with the Supt, and although it sounds like they did not have that relationship with the previous Supt, they can lay down that expectation now. I'm not into "he said/she said"...give the guy a contract and tell him he needs to produce or move on.

Matt D. if you knew what has really been going on at CO you would not be saying that. Ask around to the teachers and find out why Todd is not a good choice. He is LUCKY that he has not been in trouble for some of the things he has done. It is wrong both morally and professionally. If Conrad would not have been his boss, he'd have been gone a long time ago. He has no working knowledge of curriculum, no follow through skills, and certainly no organizational skills.

This is where I'm confused. I know several teachers, many of them have been on board for quite some time; they have always said positive things about Mr. Bugnacki's leadership. A couple have said that he's in over his head, trying to balance what would be 2 or 3 different positions in another district at once. (I think someone made the point on a different thread that maybe going back to a traditional CO where people could concentrate on a dedicated area would be more productive, which makes sense.)
I'm still not convinced that taking the time and money to do a search wouldn't simply produce what we could already have without a ripple in the educational pool. But that's just me. BTW...I was told that this forum is only for the "CO-haters who have personal vendettas going", and that if I posted here I would be insulted in short order. Thanks to everyone for civilized discussion! I wish the JS blogs were this informative AND polite.

And PS....to an earlier comment above: go over your boss' head to the school board when you don't agree with him? Not very professional and DEFINITELY not good for job security! (especially in public education!)

Your Boss is The School Board. They would have every right to go to the Board with a problem.
