The timetable for a class action lawsuit fled by teachers against the Greenfield School District has been put on hold while the two sides try to work things out.

The lawsuit, filed in early January, was the result of teachers feeling their 2012-13 contracts included illegal and unenforceable provisions.

The teachers claim their contracts violate state statues regarding salary adjustments, the district’s liquidated damages schedule and the termination of employment.

The district had 20 days to issue an answer to the complaint, but Jim Korom, the attorney for the school district, told Patch both parties have agreed to talk about settlement options first, so the timeline for an answer, as well as other litigation steps, are on hold until at least March 15.

“If those discussions bear fruit, great,” Korom said. “If not, the litigation process will proceed.”

Korom added if the sides are making progress on a settlement, the parties may push back the date for an answer again.

The Wisconsin Education Association Council did not immediately respond to an email from Greenfield Patch.
