Gov. Scott Walker Announces Manufacturing Jobs on State Tour

He was at Jensen Metal Products in Caledonia Monday afternoon to announce the addition of 39 jobs. He earlier announced 350 new jobs at a plant in Neenah.

It will take baby steps for the state of Wisconsin to get the 250,000 new jobs Gov. Scott Walker promised on the campaign trail in 2010 and recommitted to over the weekend, he said Monday.

Walker made the statement while speaking to about 50 employees of Jensen Metal Products, when he stopped in Caledonia while campaigning for the June 5 recall election.

Walker announced Monday that Jensen Metal Products will expand its manufacturing operation, creating 39 new jobs, thanks to $2 million in tax credits through the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation over the next several years.

The announcement came just a few hours after Walker was in Neenah to announce Plexus Corp., another manufacturing company, is planning to create up to 350 jobs thanks in large part to $15 million worth of enterprise zone tax credits through the WEDC.

“Those are nice (announcements) to have a few big ones, but in the end, the way to get the economy going is not to get one or two big announcements, but hundreds and hundreds of 10, 15, 20, 30 (new employee) announcements,” Walker said. “We’re committed to small business growing.

“If there are larger businesses that want to grow, we’re going to do cartwheels to get them, but it’s really about helping our existing, small businesses succeed. … We can be a better partner and better ally to small businesses and that will help us get to that 250,000 job growth.”

Over the weekend, Walker recommitted to his pledge to bring 250,000 jobs to the state by 2015. He told the small crowd of Jensen employees that since taking office, the state has gained 14,4000 new manufacturing jobs, including 6,500 since Jan. 1 of this year, a tally Walker said was the sixth-most in the nation.

“It’s announcements like this that are part of that trend,” Walker said. “It’s incredibly important to us. We’ve been working on announcements like this for the last year and half. If things work out three weeks from tomorrow, we hope we’ll be in a position to continue doing that instead of going backwards.

Walker remained cautiously optimistic about the state’s job growth despite admitting April’s job numbers, expected to be released later this week, will likely be neutral at best. He said many employers have put off hiring because of worries about the recall.

Patriot can I ask, are you one of the cronnies that have the "I stand for Walker" sign in the yard? I laugh all the time when I see these. What politician is worth pitting neighbor against neighbor? Walker has done so much for you that you are willing to lay down your life for him. Come on, this guy Walker cares less about you and I. His puppets and the cronnies that put these signs out are idiots being played like fools. He wants your money, your donations and then when he slaps his GOP national agenda and makes Wisconsin a Right To Work state the workers will be left with "no rights" at all, other than bringing home a paycheck. Walker will let big business do whatever they want to the workers. He already eliminated filing discrimination cases against employers. Why stop there. Soon you will have no 401k, no pension, no sick leave, no vacation time. Thats is what will happen and then all you people that have those signs will all be crying that your company did this or that to you and they can't, yes they can, YOU allowed it and it starts now and here. Over 5,000 business have closed under Walker and over 29,000 jobs lost. Walker will spin it this week and all you cronnies will be posting on here that he has created jobs also. Sickenning.

@Patriot -- How is a 401K investing in government bonds 'coming after your 401K'? 401K money is invested in all kinds of things, some of the mutual funds that make up my IRA portfolio are invested in government bonds. It's about the safest investment there is, until jackhats in Congress talk about the government defaulting. The idea, though, is that bond money gets paid back with interest.

401Ks are under private management, and it's up to those fund managers as to how much risk they want to take.

Did you even understand the issues discussed in that video, Patriot? The issue was the high management fees charged by some 401K managers, which means the managers are the ones getting rich, not the investors. That, by the way, is why I have my money with Vanguard.

@Randy-Dont be so narrow minded. The point of the video was there were flys on the wall saying there were items of discussion that entailed the current admin possibly looking at the 401's. Of course it was denied. My point being is your hanging Gov Walker yet the current Obama Admin has been on office for over 3 years and only racked up debt, def have done nothing to create jobs and oh said its ok for same sex marriage.

The point of the video was Fox Business news getting its knickers in a twist over some chicken-little internet rumor. "I don't want some bureaucrat overseeing my 401K money!" Well, I wouldn't want some hedge-fund manager overseeing my 401K money and taking an extra big crumb for doing it. Or making extra risky investments.

I had to laugh at the reference to 'the same people who manage Social Security'. There's not much to manage with Social Security -- any surplus is invested in Government bonds by law. The return is low, but the risk is much less.

Governor Walker is laying the groundwork to bring Wisconsin into the modern global economy, but more needs to be done. Wisconsin MUST become Right-To-Work, defined pension plans for public employees MUST end, and government MUST get OUT of the insurance industry.

Police and Fire need to be addressed next - substantial cuts in pay and benefits must be made so that more can be hired while being paid less. those unable to grasp economic reality need to be cut loose - they can find their employment elsewhere - there are a lot of good people looking for work that are 21st. How much salary is too much or not enough Richard when you have an armed robber in your home and the police respond and save your family. How much is too much? You want to put a price tag on it, go ahead and do it. You and Diane Hendrick can then work on the right to work state stuff. Soon you will be looking and guess what, you no longer have a 401k plan. Then your vacation time will be cut from 3 weeks to 1 week. No more sick time. Thats what will happen if you push the right to work state. Who will defend the workers and workers right? Walker already cut the discrimination claims for workers being discriminated against, so what is next? 14 y.o in the assembly line? Careful what you wish for Richard.

What was the cost of the high speed rail project we rejected? And how many real jobs was that supposed to produce?

I think we were looking at somewhere around $810M in taxpayer funded construction costs. Lets be generous and say that produced 13000 jobs (that was the figure provided by pro-train folks - I think most rational folks would find that claim debatable). Total cost to the taxpayer - about $62,000 per job. And that doesn't take into account operation and maintenance costs not expected to be covered by ridership fees.

Were you "on board" for that one, Robert?

The train was expected to have 89 full time positions after it's build and 13K is such an exaggeration for it's construction. There is no industry or small business that would be created around it and it would need constant state funded taxpayer subsidies. In contrast to the mine where it would create thousands of full time long term jobs, no state or federal subsidies and would generate millions if not 1 billion+ in tax revenue.

Then we find out that the water was severly contaminated within 10-15 miles of the mine and that this area is deemed unsafe for generations. Will it all be worth it? Look at Lake Michigan where we can not eat any fish from. The anti environmentalists should have to lay on the beach in e-coli and have to eat nothing but fish from Lake Michigan. Then they may change their mind. Unfortunately, I have treated many hmong people with mercury poisoning because they ate too many fish and some died but anti-environmnetalists will say the libs are crazy. I say we are all crazy for not protecting our water and food sources. Are we really that dumb?

This mine would have been around for decades, not just 10 years.
What are you worried about in the water, Sulfur? The mines around MN have no ground water or river effect. A gallon of milk test higher in the sulfur readings than a gallon of ground water. Tailing piles are managed and run off is controlled and treated. This is the part you don't hear about on the news. This mine was to use magnets instead of heavy washing to process.

It is also a dumb point to debate. When this company now opens a mine in MI it will be only a few miles away from our site. So the same water you are so worried about is still at "risk."

Yes dumping billions of gallon of raw sewage into Lake Michigan is a concern. But you want to vote the guy responsible for that into state office?

Mine = bad, will pollute because I was told so

This is why you are not a producer, you are unable to understand how expansion and hiring occurs. Probably why you work for someone else.

2 million in tax credits. Not 2 million in cash.
Over several years, not all at once for a company that has demand
Unlike obama investments where they is little demand, Walker is not forcing the economics
For 39 employees.
Credit only given if you hire , No hiring no credits.
More you hire more credit you receive.
Those you hire now off UI.
Those you hire now paying income tax to state
Business now uses tax credit to expand business to business spending
Vendors of business have more income
Vendors of business now need to hire due to increase in demand
More profits more tax revenue, more hiring more income taxes collected.

Guys, this is how business expansion works: higher demand, hire more, company profits. Under Walker, create jobs for tax credits, company profits, no higher demand, take tax credit, layoff workers.

Lesson learned in Minnesota when they tried the same thing; you must have a real demand for product before hiring and expanding. Bottom businesses will always want to expand on their own if demand is high; they will hire more; they aren't stupid, they will realize the profit without Walker tax credits.

The labor isn't free. The company still has to pay these new hires a salary, benefits and whatever else they include. The measly tax credit is not a wash to "pay" for this is it not welfare. There is apparent demand at this company and room for growth otherwise they would not be hiring.

You really think that the tax credit pays for the employees salary + benefits + there is left overs to profit off of?! The tax credit is over a period of years, so your laying them off argument is invalid.

The tax credit also provides incentive for a company to actually add full time, permanent jobs rather than just hiring out the work to part time or contract labor where the employer would not be providing any benefits.

.

If only George Bush wasn't still in charge, all of President Obama's problems would be solved. His promises would have been kept, the economy would be back on track, Iran would have stopped its work on developing a nuclear bomb and would be negotiating a peace treaty with Israel . North Korea would have ended its tyrannical regime, and integrity would have been restored to the federal government.

Oh, and did I mention what it would be like, if the Democrats, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, didn't have the heavy yoke of George Bush around their necks? There would be no ear marks, no closed-door drafting of bills, no increase in deficit spending, no special-interest influence (unions), no vote buying ( Nebraska, Louisiana ).

If only George Bush wasn't still in charge, we'd have real change by now.

All the broken promises, all the failed legislation and delay (health care reform, immigration reform) is not President Obama's fault or the fault of the Democrat-controlled Congress. It's all George Bush's fault !

Take for example the attempt of Eric Holder, the president's attorney general, to hold terrorists' trials in New York City. Or his decision to try the Christmas Day underpants bomber as a civilian.

Two disastrous decisions.

Certainly those were bad judgments based on poor advice from George Bush!

Need more proof?

You might recall when Scott Brown won the election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, capturing "The Ted Kennedy Seat", President Obama said, Brown's victory was the result of the same voter anger that propelled Obama into office in 2008. People were still angry about George Bush and the policies of the past 10 years. And they wanted change.

Yes, according to the president, the voter rebellion in Massachusetts, was George Bush's fault.

Therefore, in retaliation, they elected a Republican to the Ted Kennedy seat, ending a half-century of domination by Democrats. It is all George Bush's fault ! Will the failed administration of George Bush ever end, and the time for hope and and change ever arrive ???

Will President Obama ever accept responsibility for something / anything?

"We can be a better partner and better ally to small businesses and that will help us get to that 250,000 job growth.” I own a small business here in SE Wisconsin. One that provides necessary medical care to rurual Wisconsinites and guess what? Walker and company have not provided me with 1 tax break or the ability to obtain small business loans at reduced rates. Who is Walker kidding. If Walker has a plan for small business growth, then step on over and explain it to me because so far that is all talk again coming from Walker. BS, because he knows the jobs growth is killing him at the polls and he needs to do something to turn public opinion around. If there are other small business owners on here, please explain the "breaks" you got to me.

Mike@ Does your company make a profit off the health care of the sick people in our society? I guess your kind of like the "EVIL" drug companies or the "evil" oil companies. How can you possible justify making a profit off of sick people? I'm sure once Obamacare kicks in you'll be much better off as a business, right? How is Barrett going to make your company more profitable for you? Do all your employees earn the same pay as you? Why not? How do you sleep at night? Are you secretly taking some of your patients medication?

Walker is amazing. This guy is at a business 4 days a week. It doesn't matter if you hire 10 or 1000 people he will show up. What can I do to help, how can we help you create good jobs he asks.

It is refreshing and encouraging from what we had in the recent past and what we hear from the democrats even now. How can we slow you down? How can we put more regulation on you? How many more rules would you like to follow?

Funny steve, he is only at the companies that are dolling out thousands to support him. He is not just stopping by to say hi and how can we help you. He is saying "please provide a bigger donation" and you get a hug from the governor. Funny, I get all these e-mails from conservative groups advising to give Walker money as he is the great "uniter" while the next paragraph states that the liberals are communits, socialists, idiots. What a joke.

It's sad that you don't want more jobs in this state, but criticize Walker for not "creating" enough. Make up your mind already. Or is it that you just can't stand seeing Walker get credit for any job creation, would rather see jobs lost for political gain. Sad.

Steve, he's there for photo ops. Of course, you would turn around an blast Obama for speaking at businesses that benefited from the tax breaks in the stimulus. The difference is, the US has gained over 2 million jobs in the last 24 months, whereas Wisconsin has made a U-turn and lost jobs under Walker. Funny, even states that are far to the left of Wisconsin gained jobs in the last year. Even our neighbors gained jobs. Walker stands alone as the only governor to have LOST jobs during the last 12 months. He can visit as many businesses as he wants, his budget is stifling the economy and killing jobs.

You have been explained many times why your little jobs talking point is basic and ill informed. Your side won't let Walker create any jobs, want to personally burn him at the stake. If you cared about jobs the democrats would have voted for a Mine. But no, they choose politics instead of jobs, again.

That sir is a photo op that can be proven.

Your solution: Elect a guy that has seen jobs decrease 26%. Leads a city with the largest unemployment rate and highest taxes. What a great solution you guys must have all went to college to come up with that one.

@WIwishes-We shall see when the BLS comes out with the new jobs numbers. The real numbers that is!! The look thru was done by a total non partisan, independent economist whos says the previously released numbers dont add up. It appears Wi has more than likely added more jobs than previously reported. So we shall see!!

On the other hand all you people backing Barrett could care less what his accomplishments have or have not been. Can you seriously name 1 Barrett acomplishment in his 2 term position as Mayor of Milwaukee?
His whole basis for his campaign is Jobs and the John Doe investigation because he has nothing to run on himself. So when the jobs data gets blown out of the Water showing more of Walkers success he will be left with the John Doe fiascal.

Fred, show me the good news?. Last I looked was that Wisconsin is dead last in jobs. About 5,000 businesses closed or left under Walker. I know, Walker will spin the number this week because this is his achilles heel. A criminal investigation where just today Darlene Winks sentencing was postponed "so Wink can continue to help prosecutors in an ongoing probe". Ongoing probe? They have everyone but Walker. The John Doe adds up to one thing, Walker is a criminal and time will tell if I am right or wrong. I have lived in this state 44 years and have never seen a divide like this. Announcing that you want to "divide and conquor" is not something I look at positively. 29% of the Wisconsin people advised that they no longer talk to a friend, family member or neighbor due to political differences. This is good news?

Oh, and don't forget, as soon as all the jobs-killing "uncertainty" of a democratic election is cleared up, we'll see an instant jump in jobs! Walker said so! And you can trust him, as he NEVER says one thing to the public and the entirely opposite thing to his big donors...

You may want to look again, Mike. Wisconsin is not dead last in jobs. Wisconsin's unemployment rate is better than that of most of the other states.

Why are you blaming Walker for the political divide? I blame the dems for their overreaction and exaggerated response to Walker's budget repair bill. They spun it into a doom and gloom story of "draconian cuts" that would double class sizes and cause mass layoffs of teachers. They misrepresented the size of the contributions that public employees are having to make to their pension and health benefits. You still hear the occasional lefty parroting the false claim that teachers are suffering with a 18% cut in their take home pay because of Walker. Some on the left have even gone so far as to make death threats against republicans because of the BRB.

After all the initial overreaction to the BRB, the Lefties are now claiming that Walker's BRB/Act 10 isn't even the reason for the recalls.

Take a look at what the JS Online has written today about Wisconsin jobs for Walker's first year in office. Apparently, the 'last in jobs growth' was based on a survey of only 3.5% of Wisconsin employers, while the new figures come from an actual census of all Wisconsin employers.

"State officials said they show a gain of 23,321 jobs (public and private) between December 2010 and December 2011, which represents Gov. Scott Walker's first full year in office.

That stands in sharp contrast to a commonly used and widely reported monthly jobs measure, the Current Employment Survey, which earlier this year showed an estimated loss of 33,900 jobs in Wisconsin for the same 12-month period."

Patriot, here is the jist. Iam not a huge obama fan but look at Romney and want to move to another country like New Zealand where I can proper and not have such political turmoil. Uh, Cowdung, you can spin the cycle all you want but reality is Wisconsin from 3/1/11-3/1/12 was dead last in jobs gained. You see Cowdung, i had 3 friends leave our great state because they were educated professionals making over $60k a year and could not find a job and after 1 year all 3 moved their families where jobs are (Florida, NC and illinois...yes illinois). As these 3 are no longer looking for work they no longer count against the unemployment numbers. You want to say Wisconsin is not dead last in jobs but I say he unemployment numbers are more of a fictional number as many have left this state to get jobs. I like how Walker is going to have a press release to announce "his own numbers". Heck, I could make up anything i want and spin it anyway I can. What is he going to do when the April numbers come out against him again? All he is doing is creating another diversion becaause this is his achilles heel. Walkers reforms with regard to jobs are an epic fail. Oh BTW, with MPS announcing 400 layoffs and other school districts cutting loose people in June it will get worse, not better. If Walker is re-elected we are in big trouble. No one will have a job left by the time he is finished.

@Mike-MPS will layoff because they were one of the districts that flat out refused to work with the tools provided!! Give me a break!! The OC/Franklin School district thanked Gov Walker at the beginning of the 2011/2012 school year. They were able to balance the their budget, first time in quite some time, all without layoffs or oversize class rooms. And thats just one of many success stories.
