Wondering when your garbage will be picked up the week of Thanksgiving? Or Christmas?
According to Division of Public Works Superintendent Dan Ewert, John’s Disposal, the city’s refuse collection contractor, will run its residential routes one day after it normally does on the holiday and the rest of the week.
So, for those scheduled to have their garbage picked up on Thanksgiving Day, John’s will pick up their garbage Friday, Nov. 23. And for those slated for a Nov. 23 pickup, John’s will make its pick-ups Saturday, Jan. 24.
For the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s Day, those scheduled for pickups Dec. 25-28 and Jan. 1-4 can expect John’s to come one day later, with the final pickups those weeks coming Saturday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Jan. 5.
Don't 'leave' it until the last minute
And before the holiday weeks are here, residents can still have their leaves picked up through Nov. 19, weather permitting.
Leaves are picked up by the DPW. Remaining pickups by aldermanic districts are:
- District 1: Nov. 12
- 2: Nov. 5 and Nov. 19
- 3: Nov. 5 and Nov. 19
- 4: Nov. 12
- 5: Nov. 12
Leaves will not be collected if they include any other material such as branches, stones or grass clippings; are blocked by parked cars or other obstacles; are placed too far from the road edge or curb; or are left in an alley or on a median.
Residents may also drop off leaves free of charge at the DPW, 4551 S. 52nd St., from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in marked bins on the south side of the building. The service is for leaves only.
