Whitnall Edges Cudahy for First Football Victory
New starting quarterback Luke Mentkowski leads the Falcons to a narrow victory.
Senior quarterback Luke Mentkowski, making just his second varsity start of his career, and senior running back Travis Karweik carried the Whitnall Falcons to a 36-35 road victory at Cudahy in the season's Woodland Conference opener Friday.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online box score, Mentkowski completed 18 of 29 passes for 315 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
All three of his TD passes came in the first half, two of which went to his brother Sam Mentkowski and the third to Stephen Pelkofer as Whitnall carried a 22-21 lead into halftime.
Karweik rushed for a game-high 188 yards and had a second-half touchdown.
The Falcons pulled even at 1-1 overall and will take their 1-0 league record into a league game at St. Francis (1-1, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.
