Whitnall Rolls to Fourth Straight Powerlifting Title

Up next for the four-time state champion Falcons is nationals in Wisconsin Dells, where Whitnall hopes to defend its title earned last season.

The powerlifting team can official be referred to as a dynasty.

The 2011 national champions won their fourth straight Division 2 state championship with a 67-point effort March 10, at South Milwaukee High School.

Seven of the 11 Whitnall boys competing at the state meet finished in the top-five of their respective weight class. Each lifter competed in three different lifts: squat, bench and dead.

At 148 pounds, Nate Stemo rode a state-record effort of 530 pounds in the squat to a first-place total of 1,160 pounds. Teammate Troy Monty was the runner-up with 1,110 pounds.

The Falcons also claimed state individual titles at 114 pounds, where Danny Voelkel totaled 860 pounds and at 242, where Jake Hardy lifted a whopping 1,475 pounds in three lifts.

Whitnall’s other second-place effort came from Zach Harenda at 123 pounds with 870 total pounds. Andy Karwoski (132) and Drake Ambroch (198) were both fifth.

For the girls, Colleen Barnstable was seventh at the state meet at 148 pounds and qualified for nationals, which is March 23-25 in Wisconsin Dells.

The following Falcons have also qualified for nationals: Voelkel, Harenda, Karwoski, Stemo, Monty, Trevor Fuller (148 pounds), Danny Bigalke (165), Ambroch, Matt Bublitz (220) and Hardy.
