Some Parents Not Thrilled With Timing of School Closing Announcement
Parents are reporting some Greenfield high school students were on buses or at school when they were informed school had been called off.
Updated 7:30 a.m. Wednesday
Several school districts in the area have called off school today because of the overnight snowstorm that began Tuesday afternoon.
Among them are the Whitnall School District and Greenfield School District, according to the districts' websites. After-school events at Greenfield schools have also been cancelled.
The timing of the decision to close Greenfield schools, however, appears to be a point of consternation for many Greenfield parents.
Several parents said they weren't aware of the closings until close between 6:45 a.m and 7 a.m.; Greenfield High School's first-hour bell is at 7:10 a.m.
Several students and parents indicated on Greenfield Patch's Facebook page students waited outside for buses an extra 15 minutes, were already on buses when school was called or were even at the high school when the decision to close finally came.
"I chose to keep my kids home before Greenfield decided to be off today, but there were other high school students waiting at the bus stop for over 15 minutes when we found out school was off," one parent wrote. "Greenfield should have been more organized this morning."
The school "called at 7. GHS starts at 7:10," another parent wrote. "The buses are now taking the kids home. What a horrible job on the part of the school district. Some heads should roll!"
The school district issued an automated call to parents apologizing for cancelling school late, some parents said.

EVERYONE closed late. Greendale closed AFTER Greenfield. It seems like everyone in our area wasn't on the tv lists etc until after 6:30 earliest.

Maybe since there hasn't been a snow day called in a few years, they forgot how to do it? :)

Whitnall was posted by 6:00 on Channel 4. No one but Greenfield and Greendale closed so late. As employee at GHS it was very irritating to drive in and then be told it was closed. MPS closed by 5:20 why couldn't Greenfield?

the Greenfield closing was posted at 6:30 AM - I saw it on either 6 or 4 can't remember. Have a friend who stated they saw it at 6:25 AM - even so - I think whoever was making the call was taking a wait and see but the problem was the side streets were not done - saw several cars coming out of our sub-division get stuck trying to get onto 68th st - main through fares were cleared but side streets weren't touched.

By the time Greenfield made the call, kids were already waiting for buses. What is so hard about making the call?

We were literally walking out the door when we got a text from a friend saying that Greenfield was closed. Our annoyance at the lateness of it was replaced by relief that we didn't have to go out onto the crummy roads. Our street had cars getting stuck. Ultimately the right call was made.

Sometimes parents have to use their discretion. If you think it's too bad out there, leave your kids stay home.

When i heard the news Ive never been so happy to go back to sleep. I got to sit back and take a break from school on the snow day! Only, i had to shovel all the snow TWICE.... So worth it.
