WIAA March Madness Tips Off Tonight
The Hustlin' Hawks host the Cudahy Packers in a regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m.
The WIAA boys basketball postseason tournament begins tonight with teams competing in regional quarterfinal games all around the state.
One such game pits Greenfield against Cudahy at 7 p.m. in a Division 2 contest at Greenfield.
The fourth-seeded Hustlin’ Hawks have lost their last four games and are just 4-18 this season, but one of those wins was a 69-58 home victory over Cudahy on Jan. 11. In that win, Greenfield sophomore point guard Ricky Santiago scored a game-high 22 points.
Santiago leads the Hawks with 15.2 points per game.
The Packers also finished the season just 4-18 including losses in six of their last seven games.
No player averages more than Teontae Morgan’s 9.8 points per contest.
The winner will play at top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran (20-2) at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The regional final is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Oak Creek.
Whitnall boys get a bye
The Whitnall boys basketball team will try to go 3-0 against New Berlin Eisenhower, the team it shared the league title with, when the Falcons host the Lions at 7 p.m. Friday.
Junior guard Stephen Pelkofer leads the Falcons with 16.7 points per game with Bryan Nagy averaging 10.4. Eisenhower has three players in double digits, led by freshman point guard Reed Timmer’s 17.
The winner plays New Berlin West, Pewaukee or Catholic Memorial in a regional final at 7 p.m. at Waukesha West.
Girls teams wrapping up regular season
The local girls teams close the regular season when they face each other at Whitnall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Whitnall is 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the conference; Greenfield is 7-13 and 4-12.
