A 33-year-old Greenfield woman had no problems trying to save herself from an arrest after she saved her 40-year-old boyfriend from a drug overdose.

According to the Greenfield Police Department report, the woman called 911 just before 12:45 a.m. Feb. 4, and told dispatchers her boyfriend was on his knees, gasping for breath and had a blue tint to his lips in the couple’s home in the 3500 block of South 34th Street.

The woman told police her boyfriend had been drinking and earlier had assisted her in putting a Fentanyl patch on her back. She said she was prescribed the patch, which is often used for chronic pain management. She said her boyfriend had trouble applying the patch on her back and believed his reaction was a result of the patch coming into contact with his skin.

But it turns out there was much more to the story than the girlfriend initially divulged.

Greenfield paramedics told police the man’s condition was a drug overdose, and not caused by the circumstances the woman described.

Paramedics also found a crack pipe in the man’s pocket, and officers found multiple pieces of aluminum used to cook drugs in their home, and straws used to smoke them were found in the couple’s common sleeping area. Police then arrested the woman for possession of drug paraphernalia.

While in the hospital, and well enough to give a statement, the man told police he had smoked the Fentanyl patch by placing it on aluminum foil, lighting it from underneath and using a straw to smoke it. He told police he had never done it before and that it was his girlfriend’s idea. He was arrested for possession of a Schedule II narcotic.

As for the crack pipe found in his jeans, he told police he smoked cracked years ago and that it must have been in his jeans for a long time.
