Poll: What's Your 'Dancing With the Stars' Involvement?

Are you one of the people who helped Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver reach the finals on the popular TV show?

Don’t underestimate this Packers wide receiver's ability. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to Green Bay Packers fans that Donald Driver has the moves. We’ve all seen him wiggle his bum on national TV after a good play. And for the past few months, Packers fans have watched him excel on Dancing With the Stars. Driver needed a miracle to stay alive this week to make it to the show’s finale, wrote the Washington Post. He got that miracle Tuesday night. Is it bad to admit I have yet to see an episode of Dancing With the Stars? I’m not a big TV person and I watch stuff when I get to it. But I’ve seen fans on Donald Driver’s Facebook page cheering him on and talking about voting for him. It makes me curious – what’s your involvement in helping …

In Other Words: Follow That Book's Trail

How picking up and reading one book can lead to another, and another and another.

What I love about books, and libraries, and catalogs, is the somewhat weird trail one can follow starting with just one title. For instance, here’s an example of a trail I recently followed, starting with The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The Help lead to…. Below stairs: the classic kitchen maid's memoir that inspired Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey by Margaret Powell: A kitchen-maid's through-the-key-hole memoir of life in the great houses of England. At 15, in the 1920s, she arrived at the servants' entrance to begin life as a kitchen maid.  Lowest of the low, her world was one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and even bootlaces to be ironed. Margaret tells her tale of … (...read more)…

In Other Words: The Greenfield Public Library's Suggested Reads

In Other Words: What do Librarians Read?

The Greenfield librarians have plenty of suggestions of what to check out at the library, but what are they reading themselves?

Sometimes the best ideas are the simpliest ones. I polled the library staff to find out what they are reading. In no particular order, here is what is on their bedside tables (or E-readers): Bossypants by Tina Fey: From her days as a nerd to the tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to a nearly fatal honeymoon, comedian Tina Fey reveals all, and proves that you're no one until someone calls you bossy. Reader’s comment: "Parts of it were hilarious!" State of Wonder by Ann Patchett: Pharmaceutical researcher Marina Singh goes to the Amazon to investigate a colleague’s death under strange …

In Other Words: Jazz Appreciation Month

Jazz lovers, there are plenty of books, DVDs and CDs available at the Greenfield Public Library to help you show your appreciation during the music's special month.

April is Jazz Appreciation Month. It is a special month to draw attention to the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz and its importance to American culture. Here are some items on jazz that are available at the Greenfield Public Library. Understanding Jazz: Ways to Listen. Tom Piazza. 2005. This book is both a history of jazz and a guide to a deeper appreciation of it. There are simple explanations and analogies to illuminate the basics of listening to a jazz performance. Points from the text are illustrated and reinforced in on the accompanying CD in recordings from some of jazz’s most gifted musicians Jazz Lives: 100 Portraits in Jazz. Gene Lees. John Reeves, Photographer. 1992. The author and photographer spent close to four …

Show Off Those Easter Eggs In Our Photo Gallery

That's it, the eggs have it. You've subsequently colored those eggs and are "egg-stremely" proud of your creation. Why not show off your work?

What's your favorite color when it comes to Easter egg dying? Do you go with your basic solid color or fancy those eggs up? And the burning question is ... what do you do with them after they are created? I always feel a little bad for those poor eggs. They were so pretty and then, you crack open those fragile shells and make a lot of egg salad sandwiches. Well I'd love for you to show off your eggs and I know there will be a lot of egg dying going on since everyone has off from school today. So feel free to upload your photos.

In Other Words: Mormons - Fact and Fiction

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a Mormon. Here's your chance to learn more about religion of one of the GOP's front-runners.

Considering we might want to learn something about Mormonism, in light of the upcoming presidential election, here are some titles that explore the Mormon religion, in non-fiction and fiction.  First from the more factual side: The Mormon People: the Making of an American Faith by Matthew Bowman: Religious historian Bowman presents 180 years of Mormon history and doctrine, recounting the church's origin and development, and explaining how Mormonism came to be one of the fastest-growing religions in the world.  He then sets the scene for the 2012 presidential election, with its potential to mark a major turning point in the way the faith is perceived by the American public. Under the Banner of Heaven : a Story of Violent Faith by Jon …

@Don Ormsby...I used to listen to K-Talk while I lived in SLC. I would occasionally listen to Van Hale and he had some interesting programming. I was one of the few non-Mormons who used to watch or listen to Conference.   more ›

Present Perfect: Mind What You Say, It's National Grammar Day

Parts of speech and their proper placement should be paramount concerns on Sunday.

"Language is something to celebrate, and March 4 is the perfect day to do it. It's not only a date, it's an imperative: March forth on March 4 to speak well, write well, and help others do the same!" So says Grammar Girl, host of National Grammar Day, being observed Sunday by those who still cherish the joy and precision of proper syntax and usage. For one day, at least, Grammar Girl implores that you mind to whom you are speaking and not lay aside the rules of English – even if your typical communication reads something to the effect of: "LOL so what U doing L8TR?" Here are some tidbits from the Grammar Girl website: National Grammar Day was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good …

Hey, politically correct speech police where are you? National Grammer Day is about empowering the English language (obviously by some radical right wing nut jobs) wih no consideration for other languages. I'm going to sue them into oblivion for being insensitive to me. I'm going to sue them into oblivion for being insensitive to the Cajons. Someones rights are being trampled on. I'm deeply …   more ›
