Whitnall High School Boys’ Basketball Team Starts Fresh this Season

The Whitnall High School boys’ 2012-2013 basketball season is coming into full swing as the team prepares to compete in the Woodland Conference.

The boys’ freshman, junior varsity, and varsity teams began tryouts the week of Nov. 5, and the official team rosters were determined and announced Monday, Nov. 12.

The varsity team had their first scrimmage over the weekend at Union Grove High School, where they played four scrimmages. Junior Carly Wagner, one of the two team managers who attended the scrimmage, talked about how the team looked.

“Compared to their competition, they looked good," she said. "They played well together as a team, and looked quick and agile. Although compared to last year they look young, they definitely have potential for a three-peat.”

The team won the conference title two years in a row under head coach Kent Kroupa, and is striving for the title again, but this year under new head coach Steve Kujawa. After having a 22-3 record last year, senior Daniel Weymier, one of the three captains, will not lower his expectations for the season even with the coaching change.

Weymier expects the team to, “Win conference- to make a three-peat, to win our regional for the third year in a row, and keep improving as the year goes on.”

Not only does the team have a new head coach, they also have to fill the spots of seven seniors that left last year.

“This year will be a lot different because of how many seniors we lost and how successful they were. We also lost a lot of leadership, but we are looking forward to a lot of people stepping up to fill those roles,” said senior captain Sam Mentkowski. "There is pressure filling the roles of last year’s seniors because of how much hard work they put in, but we know if we do our jobs we will be fine.”

The team is ready for the changes they will undergo and for what the season has in store for them. The whole community is optimistic for the boys’ season because the team has so much potential this year and the fans are ready to come out and supports them at their first game, Saturday, Nov. 17, at Waukesha West.
