Whitnall Wrestlers Take Fourth Straight From Greenfield

For the fourth year in a row, Whitnall High School's wrestling team defeated crosstown rival Greenfield in Woodland Conference action Wednesday night at the Whitnall gym. The Falcons won 10 of 14 matches en route to a 49-21 victory.

Falcon 220-pounder Ethan Harycki set the pace for the night in the opening match, pinning Greenfield's Brandon Tolbert at the close of the first period. The teams then traded forfeits, with Alex Morton scoring for Greenfield at 285 and Josh Rinka taking the points for Whitnall at 106.

Anthony Senthasivouk, who usually wrestles at 106 for the Falcons, moved up to 113 pounds and pinned Greenfield's Logan Zabkowicz early in the second period. In the following match, Falcon 120-pounder Joe Price scored a reversal at the final buzzer to eke out an 8-7 win over Adam Zieman.

Whitnall's Blake Leslie then took a 10-3 decision over Hawk 126-pounder Dylan Kambera. Whitnall's Dylan Kellner next effectively put the meet out of reach when he pinned Greenfield's Andrew Patrick early in the second period.

In the next match, Greenfield 138-pounder Victor Castro scored the visitors' only pin, a third-period effort over Mark Burakowski. Whitnall's Nick Monty responded by pinning the Hawks' Dominic Caputa in 1:12.

Ryan Olson, one of seven sophomores who took to the mat for Whitnall, then brought the crowd to its feet with the most improbable win of the night. Olson was trailing 13-5 when he took down and pinned Greenfield's Tom Friedbacher with just 18 seconds left in the match.

The Falcons' senior co-captains then split a pair of decisions. Zach Price lost 14-10 to the Hawks' Tyler Dorfner, while Zach Barnhart shut out Turner Panich, 9-0. Panich was the only Greenfield wrestler to score against Whitnall in last season's meeting of the two teams.

Whitnall's Michael Langenohl added a 5-3 win over Chad Karges at 185, and Matt Braatz picked up the hosts' 195-pound forfeit for the visitors.

Whitnall coach John Quinlan credited his team's ability to wrestle the full six minutes as crucial to the win. The team dropped a one-point heartbreaker to Green Bay Saturday in large part to giving up last-minute pins in three matches.

"Tonight, we really outscored them in the third period," Quinlan said. "They really took it to heart about going the full six minutes. Ryan Olson and Joe Price didn't give up and came through with wins. Zach Price got caught, but he saved three team points by not letting himself get pinned," the coach said.

PinPoints:

  • The Falcons will face Plymouth, Wisconsin Dells and Fond du Lac in the first three of five contests at the Wisconsin Dells Duals Saturday.
  • A schedule change moves Whitnall's next home meet, against Greendale, to Thursday, December 20.
  • SevenWhitnall junior varsity wrestlers won matches Wednesday, including a pin by Tyler Rabideaux.

Whitnall's coach is always changing the wrestlers throughout the match. This is the second time I have seen this team send out its wrestlers to shake hands, get announced by weight class and when its time to wrestle, different wrestlers (than the one's initially announced as match-ups) come out to wrestle when it's match time. When being announced, the wrestlers are all lined up in the right order by weight class!! So, it is apparent that once they coach sees who is wrestling who he changes things up. Although I've been told this is what Whitnall does -- WAY TO KEEP THE TRADITION ROLLING ON!!!!

Not sure what the point is. Whitnall has been doing it that way for a long time. They don't have the luxury of having alot of depth and this year they are starting 8-9 sophmores. Last night they had 2 starters out with injuries and had to forfeit those weights. They juggled the line-up around to get the best possible match ups in order to get their team the best chance to win. Wouldn't you want your coach to do the same? Give the team the best chance of winning he can and give the kids the best chance at being successful. THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE A TRADITION OF WINNING THAT KEEPS ROLLING ALONG!!!!

The point is the Whitnall coach KNEW who was injured BEFORE the lineups were announced by the announcer sitting at the table just like the other team knew of its injuries. When you send a kid out there to shake a hand, he is the wrestler of that match. I am not talking about the sheet of paper they hand out at the door, that is NEVER accurate for any team. Whitnall has always changed their wrestlers after they shake hands!! The lineup is set at that point, unless of course, the wrestler tripped on the mat back to his seat waiting for his match to start???
