Altos: Earth, Friday, October 4, 2013, 7:00 p.m., Oriental Theatre (2230 North Farwell Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202) A co-commission by Alverno Presents and the Milwaukee Film Festival.
Altos bill themselves as a “surly high school orchestra.” For this one-time-only performance, the start of Alverno Presents’ indoor season and the 2013 Milwaukee Film Festival’s Centerpiece Film, the Altos perform their original score to Aleksandr Dovzhenko’s silent Russian cinema classic, Earth (Zemlya).
The Hinterlands: The Circuit, Friday & Saturday, October 18 & 19, 2013, 8:00 p.m., Pitman Theatre (3431 S. 39th Street, Milwaukee WI 53215) A co-commission by Alverno Presents, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, and the National Performance Network Creation Fund.
The Hinterlands make a daringly physical and shockingly funny original work that brings Vaudeville into the post-industrial age.
Nick Sanborn: Lend Me Your Voice, Friday & Saturday, November 8 & 9, 2013, 8:00 p.m., Pitman Theatre (3431 S. 39th Street, Milwaukee WI 53215). A co-commission by Alverno Presents and Duke Performances. Limited tickets available.
To say Nick Sanborn is a professional, performing musician is an understatement. The clear-eyed yet wry Sanborn will narrate his own story, talking between performances with some of his most esteemed collaborators. Each will perform a solo with Sanborn and then join the collected ensemble that accumulates as the night progresses.
Lionel Popkin: Ruth Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Saturday, November 16, 2013, 8:00 p.m., Pitman Theatre (3431 S. 39th Street, Milwaukee WI 53215) A co-commission by REDCAT, Alverno Presents, Dance Place and the National Performance Network Creation Fund.
Lionel Popkin’s dances are simultaneously low-tech and lush. The half-Jewish/half-Indian Popkin begins from this perspective to ask how our origins inform who we are, what belongs to us, and what falls outside of our claims to personal identity.
Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio, Thursday, February 6, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Wehr Hall (4100 West Morgan Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53215
Dr. Lonnie Smith is the Cheshire Cat of jazz. The first thing you see is his beguiling smile. An authentic master of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, Dr. Smith has been hailed as a legend, a living musical icon.
Unlooped vs. Marvin Gaye, Saturday, March 1, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Pitman Theatre (3431 S. 39th Street, Milwaukee WI 53215). A commission by Alverno Presents.
“Unlooped vs. Marvin Gaye” assembles a generationally and racially diverse company of artists for a one-of-a-kind, one night only performance reimagining a little-known yet seminal work of Marvin Gaye, his 1978 double album, “Here, My Dear.”
LeeSaar The Company: grass and jackals, Saturday, March 15, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Pitman Theatre (3431 S. 39th Street, Milwaukee WI 53215)
Led by director/writer Lee Sher and dancer/choreographer Saar Harari, this diverse company of dancers are perfect guides for a tour of global hyperconnectivity. Described by The New York Times as never less than remarkable to watch, LeeSaar’s latest, grass and jackals, luxuriates in extremes powerful and delicate, grotesque and gorgeous, all the while ricocheting from climax to climax.
Solo Flight: Colin Stetson, Jeanine Durning, and Morgan Thorson, Monday – Sunday, April 14-20, 2014, Varying times and venues
Solo Flight is a week-long festival taking place at venues all over Milwaukee. The juxtaposition of bass saxophonist Colin Stetson, spoken-word artist Jeanine, and dancer/choreographer Morgan Thorson within one week at four different venues is a singular pass into the euphoric reaches of inner space.
