Free Bullying Prevention Training for Educators

The Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls will offer free bullying prevention training to all teachers, administrators and support staff. The training will take place on November 9 from noon until 4:00 p.m. Participants should pre-register by sending an email to Research.Center@alverno.edu and include their name, school, grade and email address by November 1.

The training will be facilitated by Nancy Athanasiou, dean of the Alverno College School of Education and the Research Center Curriculum Coordinator, and Kayla Fraley, seventh grade teacher at Whitnall Middle School and Curriculum Writer for the Research Center for Women and Girls. Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • Those who bully and why
  • Characteristics of the victim, and why s/he may not speak up
  • The role of the bystander
  • Strategies for students involved in a bullying incident
  • Advice for talking to parents

“This training will be really useful for anyone seeking ways to create community as a way to prevent bullying behavior,” said Athanasiou. “Our curriculum includes best practices for dealing with bullies based on the latest research. It will also give educators the opportunity to share their experiences with other educators.”
