Dan Jansen Family Fest Review

Kids, adults enjoy rides, dancing under cloudy skies.

Hundreds of people, young and old, enjoyed oldies music, food and fair rides  at the 17th annual Dan Jansen Family Fest despite the dreary weather on Saturday.

The annual event, held on Memorial Day weekend in Konkel Park, raised funds to pay for City of Greenfield Parks Department projects.

Josie Lopez strolled around the fair with a child in tow and a child in a stroller as the skies remained dim Saturday.

"It depends on the weather," said Lopez, who added that the length of the trio's stay was also dependent of the children's mood and her finances.

"It's expensive," said Lopez, who budgeted $50 total for the fair.

Like many first-time fairgoers, Lopez saw crews erecting the gigantic colorful contraptions on the fairgrounds days before the fest opened.

"I just stumbled into this one. I saw it yesterday when they were setting up and I said that we have to come back," said Lopez, of West Allis.

Lisa Loomis welded an air-filled 4-foot sword while standing near the miniature choo-choo train ride.

"He likes the rides," said Loomis, who brought her 4-year-old son and her husband to Jansen Fest. "We just stopped in to check a few things out, maybe have dinner and then go."

Saturday marked the first Jansen Fest that Loomis attended.

"We only do a few festivals a year," said Loomis, a Milwaukee resident who lives nearby the fairgrounds.

Five minutes later, Korean War veteran John Gerischer was found dancing. Gerischer and a bunch of friends attended Jansen Fest for the music.

"Every time they have Jansen Fest, we try to make it," Gerischer said. "We just love dancing."

As the Oldies But Goodies Spectacular Band played in the main entertainment tent,  the West Allis man got his groove on.

"It's good exercise for one thing and for me, I become part of the music because I love music," Gerischer said. "It's a nice event, it really is. Any time they have a good band, we are going to be there."

Despite the good time had by many, Greenfield Police made 29 arrests at Jansen Fest during the first two day of the event, according to the department's Twitter account. The arrests were made for disorderly conduct, underage drinking, drugs and tobacco.

"We are working extra hard to provide a safe atmosphere for this event," the department said on its feed.

Police and security presence seemed to be beefed up on Saturday. Police and security personnel were seen roaming the grounds on foot with a pair of officers ride bicycles through the fair.

Two years ago, 40 arrests were made and a police officer was assaulted during the last night of the event, according to news reports.
