In Other Words: British Royalty

The Greenfield Public Library offers weekly book suggestions about a topic of its choosing.

Were you absolutely enthralled by the award winning movie The King's Speech? Here are just a few books that has to offer for further reading about the history of the characters.

  • The Story of Britain: From the Romans to the Present: A Narrative History by Rebecca Fraser, 2005: Fraser covers an astounding range of important British individuals from Roman times to the present in chronological order.
  • The Windsor Story by J. Bryan III. and Charles J. V. Murphy, 1979: In this New York Times bestseller, authors write about the scandal between the Duchess of Windsor and Prince Edward which led to his dethronement as the King of England.
  • Kings Speech : How one man saved the British monarchy by Mark Logue, 2010: This book is based on the recently discovered diaries of Lionel Logue, the man who treated King George VI. Logue's grandson, Mark, wrote about his grandfather's relationship with the Duke of York, who later became King.
  • The Queen Mother : The official biography by William Shawcross, 2009: With unrestricted access to the queen mother's personal papers, letters and diaries, this respectful, mostly uncritical biography by veteran journalist Shawcross focuses on the courtship of Elizabeth (1900–2002), the daughter of a Scottish earl, by the future King George VI; the shocking abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson; and WWII, when Elizabeth's narrow escape from a bomb that hit Buckingham Palace helped her commiserate with her subjects during the blitz.
  • George, Nicholas and Wilhelm : three royal cousins and the road to World War I by Miranda Carter, 2010: In the years before World War I, the great European powers were ruled by three first cousins: King George V, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Tsar Nicholas II. Carter uses the cousins' correspondence and a host of historical sources to tell their different stories.
