In Other Words: Indian Summer

The Greenfield Public Library provides a list of materials related to this weekend-long event.

From Sept. 9-11, the Indian Summer Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the Henry Maier Festival Grounds.The festival is the Indian Nation’s largest cultural celebration of its kind. Some items at the about Native Americans are:

Art of the American Indian Frontier: the Chandler-Pohrt Collection. David W. Penney. 1992. The Chandler-Pohrt Collection is made up of 19th century Native American art from the North American Woodlands, Prairie and Plains. This volume presents the collection with detailed documentation and commentary. It is illustrated with 220 stunning color plates.

Growing up Native American: an Anthology. 1993. This is a collection of short fiction and essays about childhood written by 22 Native American writers from the 19th century to the 1990s. Some writers included are Louise Erdrich, Black Elk, Joseph Bruchac, and N. Scott Momaday.

Wisconsin Indians. Nancy Oestreich Lurie. 2002. This is a concise history of Wisconsin’s native peoples written in a conversational tone. It covers the treaty-making era through the end of the 20th century. It also contains some black and white photographs.

World of American Indian Dance. DVD. 2003. The beauty, artistry, athleticism and competition of Native American Dance are illustrated in this one hour documentary. It was filmed in high-definition at the Crow Fair, Crow Agency Montana and is narrated by actor Peter Coyote.

Do All Indians Live in Tipis? : Questions and Answers from the National Museum of the American Indian. 2007. Adults and young adults will find answers to a wide variety of questions about Native Americans past and present. Questions cover light topics such as Tonto, wooden Indians and whether Indians wear socks, and more serious subjects like Native American religion, World War II Indian code talkers, and poverty on reservations.
