In Other Words: March Madness

The Greenfield Library takes a look at some of its best basketball-related material.

Welcome back to "In Other Words," where every Tuesday evening, the  will provide Greenfield Patch a themed list of recommended reads for you or your children.

One week it might be five classic books for children 5 and under, the next it might be the five-best "How To" books the library has to offer. As baseball season approaches, maybe you'll see a list of five great baseball books.

Between the Super Bowl and Opening Day there is March Madness. Stop in at the library for some of its basketball material that is sampled here: 

  • Hoosiers (DVD movie), 2000, 1986: An underdog high school basketball team gets a long shot chance to win the state championship. This movie was inspired by an actual event.
  • My Losing Season by Pat Conroy, 2002: Memoir of  Conroy’s senior year playing basketball at the Citadel which was a positive influence on his life even when they lost games.
  • You can Call Me Al: the Colorful Journey of College Basketball’s Original Flower Child,  Al McGuire by Joseph Declan Moran, 1999: A biography of the coach who led Milwaukee’s Marquette to the 1977 NCAA championship.
  • Shattering the Glass: the Remarkable History of Women’s Basketball  by Pamela Grundy and Susan Shackelford, 2005: This revealing book covers women’s basketball in the United States from the 1890s to the winning of the Olympic Gold Medal in 2004.
  • Full Court Press by Mike Lupica, 2001: A humorous sports fantasy about a losing pro basketball team that does the unthinkable: signs the first woman ever to play in the NBA.
