In Other Words: Prequels, Sequels and Other What Ifs

Each week, the Greenfield Public Library provides a list of great reads related to a specific topic.

Fiction authors generally try to create new characters and events but once in a while an author will take a new look at a classic or old favorite. This is a sampling of authors who have done that, and the titles are available at the Greenfield Public Library.

  • Rhett Butler’s People by Donald McCaig: This book imagines the life of Rhett Butler starting with his childhood. It was authorized by Margaret Mitchell’s estate and adds new dimensions to the still popular Gone with the Wind.
  • Hester: the Missing Years of the Scarlet Letter by Paula Reed: A look at the life of Hester Prynne and daughter Pearl after being marked with the scarlet letter.
  • Finn by Jon Clinch: The author fills in the details about Huck Finn’s family, especially his father.
  • Juliet: a novel by Anne Fortier: Julie Jacobs inherits a key that leads her to Italy where she learns about her ancestor Giulietta’s ill-fated love with a young man named Romeo. The tragedy of the past will affect Julie’s life in the present.
  • Becky: the Life and Loves of Becky Thatcher by Lenore Hart: Tom Sawyer’s childhood sweetheart gets to tell her story.
  • March: a Novel by Geraldine Brooks: This novel features the father of Meg , Jo, Amy and Beth from Little Women,  his experiences in the Civil War and how it affected him.
