In Other Words: Teen Advisory Board Makes Its Picks

If you're looking for a good book to pick up, the Greenfield Library's "In Other Words" column is the right place for you.

Every Tuesday, the provides a book list of recommended reads, usually centered around a single topic.

This week's choices come from the library’s Teen Advisory Board. The board consists of middle and high school students who are dedicated to making the library a better place. The board meets once a month to discuss books and ideas for teen programming at the library.

  • Ben's picks -- Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer: Artemis Fowl is 12-year-old and an evil genius. When he kidnaps a fairy to restore his family fortune, Artemis evokes the wrath of the entire fairy world; Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket: The Baudelaire children's have parents have died and now they must go to live with a distant relative. They soon discover that their new guardian is only after their fortune and will use any means to get it.
  • Holly's picks -- Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright: A new twist on an old tale, this is the story of Valerie and her town that is terrorized by a werewolf. Then a wolf hunter comes to town and reveals that there are werewolves living among the villagers and nobody is safe; 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher: After Hannah commits suicide, Clay receives a set of cassette tapes from her, explaining the reasons she took her own life.
  • Luke's picks --  Jaws by Peter Benchler: A great white shark is terrorizing a Long Island town and has already killed three people when the police chief decides to step in and stop the shark; The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton: The Outsiders is a teen classic that examines social classes.  Ponyboy, his two older brothers, and their friends are the poor, rough gang known as “greasers.” They are constantly at odds with the rich group, the “socs.”
  • Miranda's picks --  I am J by Cris Beam: Although J was born a girl, he feels like a boy on the inside. After his best friend rejects him, J runs away and decides it’s time to embrace his true identity; How it Was With Dooms by Carol Cawthra Hopcraft and Xan Hopcraft: Xan and his family live in Kenya and have an unusual pet: a Cheetah named Dooms.
