Belly Dancers to Perform at Konkel Park for Fourth of July Celebration

A local troupe will walk in the city's parade and then perform for their fans.

Denise Lukasik-Sedmak studied diagnostic medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but spent her elective credits exploring dance.

When a colleague mentioned that the Greenfield Park and Recreation Department was in need of a dance instructor in 1979, she felt compelled to extend her experience in teaching to her passion for Middle Eastern dance. Since then, her dance programs have been a central part of the dance offerings of the department, and this weekend, her troupe of dancers will perform during Greenfield’s Fourth of July parade and festivities.

"I never imagined dance would become such an integral part of my life," Lukasik-Sedmak said. "I loved to dance in college, but as it turns out my ability to teach has been separated in both of my worlds: medicine and dance. Teaching, as it has turned out, is a way of life for me."

About 15 years ago, Lukasik-Sedmak expanded her offerings of dance styles to include ballet, tap and jazz. Currently she teaches 12-15 hours per week year-round. Middle Eastern dance remains the core of her dance following and her students range in age from 16-80.

"It’s a dance of all ages," she said. "Professional belly dancers tend to be around age 50, but it’s something that any woman can do at any age."

Lukasik-Sedmak's students regularly perform throughout the Milwaukee area at community centers, senior facilities and festivals. Last year, her troupe participated in the International Dance Festival in Canada. Every year, the women dance during the Wisconsin State Fair as well.

This Monday, the dance troupe will walk in full costume through the downtown Greenfield parade at 12 p.m., and following the parade, the troupe will perform in the main entertainment tent at 1:30 p.m. The Fourth of July festivities are open to the public.

When considering trying belly dance for the first time Lukasik-Sedmak suggests, "just go for it."

"It’s not your typical style of exercise," she said. "You will quickly be tuned into your body in a way you probably never have before. Traditional belly dance requires you to use body isolation that separates your upper and lower torso. You’ll learn your own body’s mechanics in a whole new way – and have an amazing time while doing it.”
