African Dance and Diaspora: The Story of a People Through Dance

African dance, a reflection of thought and behavior, embodies belief systems and sustains cultural values, history and social, religious and political ideology. This class explores the expressions and mind/body experiences of African people, following their migration as enslaved people throughout the Diaspora. Through discussion, video and music, you will see the historic and aesthetic connections between Africa, the Diaspora and Black dance in America and will understand the role of African dance as a means of spiritual and artistic expression.

Instructor: Ferne Yangyeitie Caulker-Bronson, Professor of Dance at UW-Milwaukee PECK School of the Arts, and Founder/Artistic Director of Ko-Thi Dance Company
