Alverno College hosts free one-day conference as part of its 125th anniversary homecoming celebration

           A free, one-day general education conference highlighting how women’s education has influenced change will be held Friday, October 5 from 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. The conference is part of Alverno College’s homecoming celebration and year-long recognition of its 125th anniversary. Highlights of the conference include a variety of hands-on sessions led by Alverno faculty, students, staff and alumnae, as well as members of the community.

            In addition to seminars on various topics pertaining to women, participants will have the chance to take part in several art projects, one of which is the Empty Bowls Project. Faculty will be on hand to help guests create a bowl, which will in turn benefit programs that feed the area’s hungry. Visitors can also be a part of Alverno by having their portrait taken. These portraits will be used to create one giant Alverno photograph. Participants will also have the opportunity to create a small image with oil pastels on canvas.

            Music will take center stage from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. as professional musicians, many of them Alverno alumnae, perform in Reiman Plaza. There are also two concurrent art exhibits. “Places I Have Visited – A Global Photo Menagerie” features photography from around the world exhibited by Alverno faculty and staff. The exhibit is on display in the Kellogg Gallery, and there will be an opening reception from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. “Be a Part of History: 125 Years of Alverno Art” is an alumnae exhibit, and will be on display in the Art and Cultures Gallery.
