In Other Words: Cleopatra

You've seen the billboards along the interstate, now do some background research.

The Milwaukee Public Museum will host the exhibit, Cleopatra: the Search for the Last Queen of Egypt, starting Oct. 14. And in anticipation of the exhibit, check out these and other materials at the about the queen and the time period she lived in.

Cleopatra: the First Woman of Power: DVD. 1999. In this documentary Queen Cleopatra is portrayed as a visionary ruler and a brilliant strategist motivated by a genuine concern for her people. Actress Angelica Huston narrates and original location footage is included.

Antony and Cleopatra: DVD. 2001. A BBC dramatization of Shakespeare’s play in which Mark Antony, a Roman politician and general, let his overwhelming passion for the multifaceted Queen Cleopatra lead to calamitous consequences.

Memoirs of Cleopatra: a Novel: Margaret George. 1997. This bestselling novelist brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. It is told in Cleopatra’s own voice and is filled with historical detail making it possible for the reader to get lost in another time and place.

Queen of Kings: Maria Dahvana Headly. 2011. A retelling of the Cleopatra legend that is a combination of paranormal romance and historical thriller.

Cleopatra: a Life: Stacy Schiff. 2010. A biography about Cleopatra by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. The life of Cleopatra is presented to the contemporary reader in an accessible and engrossing way.

Cleopatra: Jane Bingham. 2009. For grades 3-5. Cleopatra: Egypt’s Last and Greatest Queen: Susan Blackaby. 2009. For grades 5-8: The first book is a basic look at Cleopatra’s life. It is filled with illustrations and reproductions showing how different artists have imagined Cleopatra. The other is a more detailed account told in a lively narrative. Both books have a glossary, index and bibliography.
