In Other Words: Remembering Lucille Ball

Her 100th birthday would have been Aug. 6, and the Greenfield Public Library has a list of materials dedicated to the legendary actor.

August 6 was the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Lucille Ball, comedian, actress and media executive. Although she has been gone since August 1989, people still watch her movies on DVD and her television shows can be seen in reruns on many TV channels throughout the country.

Here are some items at the that feature Lucille Ball:

Desilu: The Story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, by Coyne Steven Sanders and Tom Gilbert, 1993. This dual biography details the business and personal dealings of the famed red head and her Cuban husband. It is also a biography of Desilu productions which was responsible for hit shows like Star Trek and Mission Impossible in addition to I Love Lucy.

Love, Lucy by Lucille Ball, with Betty Hannah Hoffman, 1996. Here is a chance to hear Lucy’s life in her own words. This autobiography which, covers her life from childhood to 1964 was found by her children after her death. It is illustrated with 32 black and white photographs.

Best of Old Time Radio Starring Lucille Ball, CD, 2000. Ten radio programs from the golden age of radio featuring or starring Lucille Ball. Includes episodes from the Lux Radio Theatre, The Abbott and Costello Show, and Gulf Screen Guild theatre.

CBS Salutes Lucy : The First 25 Years, DVD, 2000. Cast members and guest stars such as Richard Burton, Jack Benny, Carol Burnett, and Harpo Marx gather to participate in a television event to celebrate the TV life of Lucy.

Fancy Pants, DVD, 1950. Bob Hope plays an American actor pretending to be a British butler. A nouveau-riche woman from New Mexico hires him hoping he will help refine her tomboy daughter (played by Lucille Ball) and turn her into a proper lady. Humorous complications arise as the daughter rebels against refinement and the townspeople mistake the phony butler for an English Earl.
