Patch Picks: National Read Across America Day

Local librarians' choices for excellent reads.

National Read Across America Day, a day chosen annually to celebrate the joys of reading across the country, was yesterday.

But that doesn't mean the reading fun is over. In honor of yesterday's big day, local libraries suggest these books to add to your reading list.

  • The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss: This family classic has been enjoyed by generations of children. This year marks Seuss's 107th birthday and Greendale Library plans to host a celebration on Saturday.
  • WinterGirls by Laurie Halse Anderson: Winner of the 2010 Milwaukee County Teen Book Award, the book deals with modern day teen issues in an engaging context. The novel is ideal for educational purposes and as a conversation starter for parents.
  • History of Love by Nicole Krauss: The March Greendale Reads selection is a compelling novel that will haunt readers and leave them wanting more. A discussion panel of the book, led by Dr. Ed Block from Marquette University, will be held in the Greendale Library on March 29.
  • Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie: The enchanting tale of the boy who never wants to grow old was the February Book of the Month for the Greendale Library staff. This adventurous story is traditionally aimed for children, but can transcend the ages and be enjoyed by all.
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman A nominee for the 2011 Milwaukee County Teen Book Award, this is story of teen exploration with a formidable heroine. The bestselling book exposes the power of family and friendship in a simple and compelling manner. It is ideal for all teens and adults alike.
