Homes Evacuated After Lightning Strike Causes Gas Main Break

Greenfield Fire Department crews have evacuated at least two homes at the southeast intersection of 84th Street and Forest Home Avenue after a lightning strike broke a gas pipe.

The lightning strike blew apart portions of a tree in the 8500 block of Forest Home, and there was a strong smell of gas coming from the base of the tree.

Greenfield Fire Lt. Paul Sustacheck said two homes were evacuated. No one was home at a nearby third residence and another was for sale and vacant.

WE Energies crews were on the scene addressing the break.

Greenfield police shut down 84th Street at Forest Home while crews made repairs.
