Whitnall High School students who foresee themselves in the future of the EMS and fire field are participating in an internship program at the Hales Corners Fire Department.

Job duties include taking out garbage’s, vacuuming, dry mopping, cleaning bathrooms and windows, and shadowing a firefighter, a lieutenant or a chief.

Whitnall students leave school early and have the chance to ride along on both EMS and fire calls. Previous interns at the fire department include Whitnall alums Alex Samosky, Hailey McElrone, Mitch Olson and current intern Bryanna Livingston.

The Hales Corners Fire Department has been willing to sponsor interns for taking the Fire 1 course to help pursue their goals in becoming a firefighter.

When asked, "Why do you want to include the community in the Hales Corners Fire Department, Deputy Chief Martin Freibergs said “Because I want the community to learn what we are all about”.

Connor Perry, a Whitnall senior interested in the EMS field said, “I plan to shadow Alex Samosky at the Madison Fire Department in a few weeks to pursue to my future."

The Fire ! course is held at both Gateway Technical College and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
