Classic Car Show Returns to Greenfield

The weekly show that used to be part of the Solid Gold McDonald's experience will be held every Wednesday night at Classic Lanes on Layton Avenue.

The classic car show that once was a major attraction at Solid Gold McDonald’s on 76th Street has returned to Greenfield.

Gina Daroszewski, owner of Classic Lanes, 5404 W. Layton Ave., will open her bowling center’s parking lot to car enthusiasts from all over the area every Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. this spring and summer.

The first show, held last week, featured about 25 classic cars.

“It was cool, but I’m thinking maybe today it will double,” Daroszewski said Wednesday morning. “Some people hadn’t gotten their vehicles out of storage yet, and now that the weather is nice, people are itching to get outside.”

Daroszewski said Jim Patterson, who once owned Solid Gold McDonald’s and ran the car show, approached her late last fall about hosting the show at Classic Lanes.

The Classic Lanes owner jumped at the opportunity.

“It’s something for people to do in the summer, hang out and be outside,” she said. “For a lot of them, it’s their hobby. It’s fun networking: How did you do that to your car? Where did you get it done? That kind of stuff.”

Mayor Michael Neitzke, the owner of a 1956 Chevrolet, said he's excited to see a car show back in Greenfield.

“The solid gold car show was one of the early leaders in car shows," Neitzke said. "What’s happened now with gas prices what they are and the economy what it is, people don’t want to drive that far.

“But there are a ton of cars in the Greenfield area, and I hope they all come out.”

Billed as a classic car show, Daroszewski, a Harley-Davidson owner, said motorcycle lovers are encouraged to bring their bikes as well. What’s more, the weekly event, which will last through mid-August, has the potential to become a family affair. Each Wednesday, Classic Lanes will have a retro night inside - $1 open bowling, shoe rentals and sodas – with beer and soda sales outside.

“It’s something anyone can come to,” Daroszewski said.

Drove by yesterday and didn't know that they were going to do this. Used to love to take my kids to Solid Gold on Wednesdays. Hope that this grows and flourishes. Wonder if there are plans for the big Fall Show like McDonald's used to have.

Hi GreenfieldParent, the Classic Lanes owner indicated there could be bigger shows on July 3 and Aug. 14, the last Wednesday of the show's run.
