Patch Picks: Earth Day

Do your share to make the Earth a better place.

Today is Earth Day!

Typically in the weeks before and after the annual celebration of the planet, communities come together to help one another make some positive strides toward protecting the environment. Patch has selected its top ways to give back to and celebrate Mother Earth this year.

Boerner Botanical Gardens: In Celebration of Trees is a family event focused on children connecting with nature through the exploration of hiking trails, tree adoption and crafts. The event will take place Friday, April 29, from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Department of Public Works: On Earth Day, the Urban Ecology Center, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), and Sweet Water organizations challenge families and neighbors in the Greendale/Greenfield areas to customize their own plan to reduce water usage inside the home. The 100 Gallon Challenge asks community members to install a rain barrel on your home’s downspout to capture water during the summer rains that will be used during the dry days for yard watering. 

Harley-Davidson Museum: Eco-Puppet Parade will be held at the Harley-Davidson Museum Riverwalk from 5-7 p.m. this evening. Opening remarks will be made by Congresswoman Gwen Moore. Local singers and dancers will perform alongside the children’s recycle art program. Admission is free and guests are encourages to bring their own lawn chairs.

Milwaukee County Zoo: Party for the Planet will observe both Earth Day and International Migratory Bird Day with an education celebration focused on eco-friendly activities all weekend. A wide range of programs and events will be held at the zoo both Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free with regular admission to the zoo.

Urban Ecology Center: Celebrates with the 24th Annual Earth Poets and Musicians Festival today from 7-10 p.m. Featuring five local performers during an evening of wisdom, passion and humor while contemplating ways to protect the Earth.
