Powerlifting Begins: Continuing the Winning Trend

This means a beginning of another exciting season for the National Champion Whitnall Powerlifting club

With fall sports ending and winter activities about to begin, the start of another exciting powerlifting season for veteran and inexperienced lifters is on the horizon.

Last year, the Falcon lifters successfully won every meet they participated in, including state at South Milwaukee and the national meet in the Wisconsin Dells.  The Falcon lifting squad is looking to take home a fifth straight State title and third straight national title this year.

The preparation for this feat all starts in weight room everyday following school.  Lifters gather after class to show their abilities as they prepare for the three regional meets prior to state and nationals.

On Mondays and Thursdays, lifters strengthen their legs and lower body as they participate in the squat and dead lift along with other exercises that strengthen those areas. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lifters participate in the bench press, which works the chest and arms. After finishing that, lifters do other lifts that work the arms and pectorals to increase those totals for the meets.

Steven Bonin said, “The workouts in the weight room are difficult and require that you put forth your maximum effort to get them done.”

With a month or two of preparation between meets, hard work and effort cause the totals to increase at a rapid rate.

With this season just about to start, all participating lifters are optimistic about the year and their chances to repeat both at State and Nationals. The veterans are continuing a trend of winning and pride that is expected to continue even when they graduate. New lifters are learning the ways to become talented lifters and continue to “go big or go home.”

For many lifters these lifting experiences are very rewarding and give them something to be proud of at the end of every season. Nate Stemo, a four-year lifter and state and national champion, said for him the most rewarding thing about powerlifting is, “going out and getting all my lifts successfully and also knowing that I did my best at the end of every meet.”

Whitnall has had such a successful powerlifting squad since I've been here. It's very impressive!
