Another Mystery Solved

People – what could we do without them?

Occasionally, in the customer service shuttle, I get the answers to burning questions. Well, not burning – more like smoldering. And, not necessarily answers but helpful perspectives but folks smarter than I am. I recently met Charlene from upstate New York.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” I asked.
“I grew up outside Buffalo.”
“I’ve been waiting for you,” I said. “I have questions.”

And so, I asked her why she thought the original settlers did not move on after the first couple of winters in Buffalo, New York.
“I wondered that too,” she said, “and I grew up there. Last summer my father died at age 83. I made a short list of questions about his life and I asked him that very thing before he passed.”

The short version is about community and suffering through something together. No matter how much snow you get your neighbors are there and everybody is helping everybody else. At least in the good old days.

Also ….. I’ve been wondering how many years or seasons of drought it took before ‘we’ called it The Dust Bowl in the 30’s.

Dan was in the van yesterday and we were talking about his involvement with World Book Night.  He said he’d read a book about the Dust Bowl. Apparently it was not principally the lack of rain or the heat but the large-scale destruction of the ecosystem and the wind. The wind was the principle actor. I am glad to know these little things. Really. It just so happened that he is also an assistant principal at an MPS school and they run a student rewards program. I gave him a Mini-Thanks card and directed him to GoodWorkCards.com, my little online store. We’ll have a little chat with the principal before the end of the school year and get some of my cards into the hand of students.

Yesterday I also got to talk again with a cellist with the MSO. We talked about musicians and repetitive stress injuries. Seems she’s met a guy at UWM that’s counseling her through the Alexander Technique. It’s basically physical therapy and how to assist musicians to get the best out of their bodies. And, she was interested in the Happy Gratitude workshop book I’m writing. @DoHappyBetter

We had such a lovely chat that she invited my wife and me to dinner.
