Hearts and Brains

"Whatever a person can do to lower their stress level naturally will add to the quality of their days."

Karen works at the Medical College in hearts and brains. She’s been here from London for nearly half her life, loves her work and wishes a few more people would pay a little more attention to the interconnections between their brains and their hearts.

“Most people see them as two separate organs,” she said, adding that they are much more than that.

“Whatever a person can do to lower their stress level naturally will add to the quality of their days.” That’s almost a quote. Too bad I can’t write things down while I am driving the courtesy shuttle.  I asked her to repeat it and that is approximately what she said.

“Heart disease kills one in four people in the United States. One in four!” she added.

After I dropped her off I flipped on The Ideas Network (90.7 locally) to hear author Donna Jackson Nakazawa talking about her book The Last Best Cure.

I immediately called Karen back, gave her a few details and told her to turn on the radio if she could.

I do not want to ruin the surprise but the author and science journalist found herself with nowhere to turn with her debilitating disease. She turned to mindfulness-based stress reduction meditation, yoga stretches and acupuncture and found amazing relief. Relief she was not able to get from any other discipline.

So, change your mind. Change your life.

I was sent to the DMV recently to get a replacement title. I am fairly happy that that is not a service we offer on any kind of regular basis. I was in line to get to the info or admission desk for 30 minutes and then waited an additional 20 minutes to get my number called.

I gave both of the service gals a Mini-Thanks card and got big smiles in return. I noticed them. I raised a moment in their days. They will remember that moment with a smile the next time they look at that card.

The giving of encouragement is a stress reducing technique. I am bio-chemically better off already. I can just feel it.
