Wanderlust, memories and new local hootch

I took Vicky to work first thing this morning. She’s back because, even though she had bad service from us last time, she bought the car there and that’s how it works.

Just a little bit later I picked up Dan. He, a former Marine, still all decked out, came out of the tail end of the Korean conflict. He spent his work life at Ladish. One of his sons wanted to take him on the Honor Flight. He said, “I’ve been to DC three times. Let someone else go.”

When his car is done, he and his wife are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary by going west for ten days to wander around. Bad Lands, Montana, hot springs, a wild horse ranch and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He’s got a Best Western discount card, AAA TripTik maps and some other valuable thing. They’re going to buy lunch meat and hard rolls and just keep moving. If his wife is half as excited as he is ... she might just wet her pants.

“But, boy if we had a President like Teddy ...”

On my next ride out I’ve got Brian Sammons, a self-described recovering attorney and recently a father. He and his wife have decided to go all in on a micro-distillery adventure. High quality, certified organic hootch right here in Bay View. Sammons intends to be up and running as Scratch Distillery by the spring of ‘14 with a tasting room near the Horny Goat on S. 2nd and Lincoln.

Finally this morning I meet Aaron pulling in to service with an old car and no plates. There’s a handmade sign taped in the window that reads: In Transit - whatever that means. And he is packed to the hilt. He said he’s touring America one dealership at a time. Apparently there are ongoing problems. I try not to get in to any of that. He’s going to be awhile and he’s hungry. So I take him to a nearby restaurant. He just got out of school in New Haven and is headed to LA - only because - it’s the farthest place from New Haven. I told him I did that when I was his age.
“Phoenix, Austin ...” I said.
“I’m from Austin.” he said

It’s amazing what we got all figured out in less than two blocks. I wished him well and he said something about a prayer card. I gave him the next best thing; a Mini-Thanks from GoodWorkCards.com

“Keep up the good work, Aaron.” I said, “Wish there was room for me in your car.”
