Arbor Day Celebration Helps Landscape Konkel Park South
Annual event features Tree City awards, tree planting demo and volunteers planting the trees.
The annual Arbor Day celebration attracted over a hundred volunteer tree planters to the new south addition of Konkel Park on Saturday May 4.
The event, sponsored by the Greenfield Beautification Committee, began with a brief ceremony where Mayor Neitzke proclaimed the day as Arbor Day and displayed the Tree City banner. Kim Sebastian, DNR representative, presented the Tree City awards and Dennis Fermanich led a demonstration of the proper way to plant a tree. After that, the volunteers dispersed to plant their trees into pre-dug holes.
The Beautification Committee’s sponsorship of Arbor Day dates back to 1992. Events have been held throughout the city at various parks, school grounds and roadway median strips. Konkel Park has been an Arbor Day site on five previous occasions.

We appreciate the help of Greenfield’s Parks and Recreation Dept. and the city’s Dept. of Public Works for helping make the event happen. Also special thanks to the citizen volunteers from Greenfield High School’s ROTC, the Elmdale school PTO and several volunteers from the Greenfield Fire and Police departments. Thanks and we look forward to next year’s event.
