Heat Health Watch: Take Every Precaution

It its first Patch blog, the Greenfield Health Department has timely tips on beating the heat this week.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting several days of hot weather beginning today (June 27). The temperature is predicted to be 95 degrees today and 98 degrees on Thursday. Furthermore, temperatures are predicted to remain in the low 90s at least through Saturday. The NWS may issue Watches, Advisories or Warnings as conditions warrant throughout the rest of the week.

This period of continuous high heat can create dangerous conditions, particularly for the elderly, the very young, people with heart or lung conditions and people who take certain medications for mental illness. Overexposure to the sun or heat can result in cramps, exhaustion, and even death. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, seek prompt medical attention.

Remember to use caution when working outdoors, and, when it is necessary to be outside for prolonged periods, be sure to practice safe sun habits. Here are further tips to follow during this hot summer to keep you and your family safe.

· Stay out of the sun, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek cooling in buildings with AC.  The lowest level of a dwelling such as first floors or basements can also provide relief as can showers and cool baths

· Avoid midday sun (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM)

· Wear a waterproof sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater to protect your skin, sunglasses to protect your eyes, and a hat to protect your face, neck, and ears.

· Remember that cloud cover and/or water does not filter most UV light, so you are not necessarily protected from the sun.

· Drink plenty of water and avoid beverages containing alcohol or caffeine (2-4 glasses per hour)

· Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing

· Check frequently on elderly relatives and neighbors or those individuals homebound or isolated.

· Do not leave young children or pets in cars for even a few minutes
