Click It...or Ticket

Traffic deaths in Wisconsin so far this year have increased compared with the same time last year. In many of these fatal crashes, occupants were ejected from the vehicle because they were not buckled up. This is why we're serious about seat belt enforcement.

Last year, there were nearly 85,000 convictions for failure to fasten safety belts. Among all traffic violations, safety belt convictions in Wisconsin were second only to speeding convictions, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. A change to Wisconsin law in 2011 makes seat belt violations a "primary enforcement" violation, meaning officers will stop vehicles with drivers or passengers who are not buckled up.

If you are stopped and ticketed by one of our officers for not wearing a safety belt, you should count yourself fortunate. At least you'll have another chance to buckle up. Think of it as a “do over”.

All of us in law enforcement have been at the scene of traffic crashes where unbuckled drivers and passengers don’t get a "do over" and were needlessly injured or killed. Each of us has seen lives destroyed and families devastated simply because someone was not wearing a safety belt.

Please, wear your seat belt, and don't let anyone ride in your vehicle who isn't wearing one.
