Have you ever read a book that you were sad to finish? One that you couldn't get out of your head after reading the last words? I just finished "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness and I'm having a hard time getting it out of my head. In fact, I'm thinking about re-reading it right away!Β My sister introduced me to the book - the first in the All Souls trilogy - and I'm so glad that she did. Now I just have to wait patiently (I'm trying!) for the second installment, due out in 2012.Β
In case you aren't familiar with the title, "Witches" is a fantasy. Harkness invites her readers to imagine a world of four types of life: humans, vampires, daemons and witches. She introduces us to an enchanted book that has been hidden by a powerful spell - one that witch protagonist Diana Bishop seems to break not only effortlessly, but unknowingly. Soon she's beset by deamons, witches and her very own vampire - all intent on learning the secrets of the book she called from special collections and now cannot get back.
I know, I know. Witches, deamons and vampires, Jenna? But I'm telling you, it's fantastic! An adult version of some big-name young adult titles, complete with lush, romantic touches of "Twilight" and magic, plot-driven twists of "Harry Potter." Read it - you'll thank me!
