Book Report - What I've Been Reading on my Staycation

A little review of the books I've read so far this week - yes, this week. A girl can do a lot of reading when she doesn't have to bother about going to work!

Since the beginning of the week, I've been tucked away at my sister's house in West Allis, taking care of her and my brother-in-law's animals while they are vacationing in Mesa, Arizona. I brought along plenty to read, though! From a stack of magazines to several books. I've kind of surprised myself with how quickly I've gotten through my piles, though, and now I'm wondering if I'll have enough to last me until their return on Monday. I may just have to start rummaging through my sister's book shelves to see if anything piques my interest there!

I started off reading (or re-reading, rather) Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. There's a sequel that has either just come out or is coming out soon, so I wanted to refresh my memory of the book. As I did the first time, I enjoyed the story of a group of mountain girls who are summoned to an academy to learn how to be princesses. The king's seeers have divined that the next princess will be from Mount Eskel, so the girls much all be ready. It's a good story about family, duty, belonging and dreams. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Then I read Fairy Tale by Cyn Balog. I had found this one at the WELS second-hand store on 51st and Howard and thought it seemed good. It was a fun story, but I was somewhat disappointed. I wanted a little more romance from the two main characters whose lives the book really revolves around. There was more when the protaganist joined the cast, but it didn't live up to my expectations. A fun read, though. And a quick one, too.

Next up was Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. This one I really enjoyed. In fact, I can't stop thinking about it! I may just have to go back and reread it. It's the first book in (what else) a triology and it takes place in Mercy Falls, Minnesota. As a young child, Grace is snatched by wolves. They are about to devour her when one of the pack saves her. For the six years after the attack, Grace and Sam, her wolf, watch one another from the woods. He looks out for her and she longs for him to be more than just her wolf. As it turns out . . . Sam isn't just a wolf. For he warm months of the year, he becomes human, his true form. But when they finally meet face to human face, is it too late? It's a captivating read - yes, you have to let yourself believe in werewolves, but, still. Lots of good romance and suspense. The second book, Linger, and the third, Forever, are definitely on my to-read list . . . once I can get to a book store and purchase them!

Just last night I started the latest by Jen Lancaster - Jeneration X. I'm literally only about 10 pages in, so nothing to report just yet. But I've always enjoyed her books and I see no reason that this one will be different!

So, what have you all been reading? Anything stand out? As for me, if that adorable pup you see pictured here can stop barking for a few minutes, I'm getting back to my books. (Isn't he just the cutest thing?!)
