Christmas Traditions
Holiday traditions and some great arts/cultural offerings in Milwaukee.
The Christmas I was 10 years old was the first time I saw "The Nutcracker" performed by the Milwaukee Ballet. My grandparents bought the tickets for me, my sister and my mom. I was enchanted. Smitten. Completely bowled over. I loved it, my sister enjoyed it and my mom tried her best to stifle her yawns. (Ballet just isn't her thing.) I didn't go back to the ballet as a little girl, but attending "The Nutcracker" has become a tradition for me in adulthood.Β
I just got home from a performance this evening and it was lovely - one of the best I remember seeing. It's funny; it's always the same story, but every year seems to bring a special touch, a slight change, a new perspective. I'm always mesmerized by the gracefullness and fluidity of the dancers, not to mention the strength, discipline and control they all show -- and make look so easy! My favorite, as always, was Pas de Duex. I just love it - I glue my eyes to the dancers and let the music play to my heart and I'm always sad to see that particular segment come to an end.
This year, I started off the holiday season with a new show - Bel Canto Chorus's "Christmas in the Basilica," which was absolutely lovely. And I'm still looking forward to another Christmas tradition - "A Christmas Carol" at the Pabst on Christmas Eve. What are your holiday traditions?
